Dear Counselor/Teacher/Advisor:
The George B Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii was founded in 1973 and approved by the Hawaii State Department of Education with the mission to provide social interaction and leadership training to gifted and talented junior high and high school students (Serteens) who wish to serve the community.
There are many definitions of gifted and talented. Scoring a 98 percentile or better on a Nationally Recognized Test (SAT, ACT, etc OR and 1Q score of 130 or higher automatically meet this requirement. If these are available, please attach the pertinent scores and sign the attached recommendation form. For those without standardized test scores, we also accept the Hawaii State Department of Education definition of gifted and talented which means the student -
(1) Demonstrates, or show potential for, superior achievement through available assessment instruments, observations, and rating scales in one of the following areas of giftedness and talent:
(A) Intellectual ability;
(B) Specific academic ability;
(C) Creative ability;
(D) Leadership capability;
(E) Psychomotor ability; or
(F) Performing and visual arts ability; and
(2) Meet the standards and requirements of the school's gifted and talented programs through additional factors and measures.
We would like to know the capacity and duration you have worked with this student and how they demonstrate gifted ability. We welcome additional comments if you feel they would be helpful.
Thank you for agreeing to complete the attached recommendation form on behalf of your student. If there are further questions, please contact us at advisors@@serteenshawaii.org or by calling 808-228-7057.
Yours in Service,
The George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii Advisor Team
