Teton Literacy Center is closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation, guidelines and ordinances. At this point, we are hoping to run a hybrid model of our tutoring program in the Fall of 2020. In this hybrid model, all one-on-one tutoring will take place via Zoom.
We also hope to offer a limited number of staff-led small groups throughout the fall. Our goal is for these groups to physically take place at TLC. However, it is possible that we will need to cancel all tutoring physically held at TLC and once again adapt these small groups to the virtual setting (possibly unexpectedly).
We believe this combination of physical and virtual tutoring will allow many of our volunteer tutors who are high-risk for COVID-19 to continue working with their student from afar; it will allow volunteers and families uncomfortable with being in shared spaces to continue participating in our program; it will allow us to have fewer people in our space as we try to assure the safety of all involved at TLC; and finally, we believe that in embracing virtual one-on-one tutoring we will be able to provide students with consistent and continuous academic support despite the many unknowns we are all facing. If we deem it is safe later in the year, we will bring physical one-on-one tutoring back to TLC.
We are currently planning to run our fall tutoring program from Monday, September 14th – Thursday, December 17th. These dates and our fall programs are subject to change at any point. Following are a few of the many factors that could impact our fall programs:
State and/or local COVID-19 guidelines and ordinances.
Teton County School District – we will strive to follow the decisions of TCSD. If at any point TCSD determines they will continue with their Adaptive Learning Plan, TLC will likely resume our virtual small groups. At this point, it is unknown if they will run physical classrooms in the fall or not.
A TLC student, staff member or volunteer testing positive for COVID-19.
TLC staff illness may result in short or long-term cancellation of specific TLC programs that staff member is associated with.
In the event of an unexpected program cancelation, TLC will communicate with all families involved via email and texts.
At this point we are unsure of how many volunteer tutors will return to TLC this year given the pandemic and transition to virtual tutoring. We also expect an increased number of students needing tutoring support. As such, it is possible that students will be on our tutoring waitlist longer than they typically have in the past. Please know that we are here to support students and families and will do everything we can to safely serve as many students as possible – the more availability you note in your application, the easier it will be for us to quickly match your student!
Finally, parents of all students who will physically attend tutoring at TLC will be required to attend a mandatory Parent Meeting via Zoom prior to their student's first day of tutoring. You will receive more information about this meeting if and when your student is assigned to physically attend tutoring.
We thank you for your flexibility and patience as we navigate this situation. We are VERY excited to see our students and families again this fall, be it virtually or physically!
