    2026-27 School Year Update

     

    Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us this school year! Our volunteers are a critical part of TLC's mission to change lives through the power of literacy. We would not be able to serve over 350 families every year, at no cost, without the support of our robust team of volunteers. 

    Our volunteer placement timeline will be August to December. Our primary need is for weekly volunteers in our K-12 Literacy Tutors and Adult ESL Small Group Leads. These positions are for the entire duration of the school year, with breaks aligning with the TCSD calendar. 

    Please spread the word about volunteering to your network! If you know of anyone who would be a good fit, please encourage them to apply!

    Volunteer Expectations

    Communication and Commitment:

    • All volunteers must notify staff at least 24 hours in advance if they are unable to make their scheduled time. Student relationships with their tutor are critical in making an impact.  Volunteer attendance and commitment is crucial.  
    • Tutoring and ESL require a weekly commitment for the entire school year. Tutoring will run weekly from September to May. ESL will begin in October, exact dates are still to be determined. Volunteers will be matched on a rolling basis. 
      • TLC also follows the TCSD school calendar, and will not have programs on federal holidays or the weeks of Thanksgiving, winter break or spring break.
      • If your weekly schedule will change due to sports, travel, work or school later in the year, please know these two programs will not be a good fit unless you can find another TLC volunteer (family member or friend) to reliably cover for you during the entire time you are gone. A replacement volunteer must also complete the entire TLC volunteer application process.
      • Once your day/time is confirmed TLC is not able to accomodate changes to our tutoring schedule. So please make sure you are taking future schedule changes into account when selecting your availability. 
    • If volunteers are going to miss more than 5 weeks throughout the school year (outside of program breaks and holidays), we ask them to consider an administrative volunteer role or split their tutoring shift with another friend or family member.  This provides consistency and a deeper impact for our students. Tutoring and ESL volunteers with more than three unexcused absences (no call, no shows) may be asked to move to a different program that requires less of a commitment. 

    CODE OF CONDUCT

    Behavior - Volunteers are to treat all students, staff and families with respect.  Please be on time and present for each session. 
    Confidentiality - Any information related to a TLC learner or their families, including their names, is strictly CONFIDENTIAL. Never divulge any information about TLC learners outside of the office or discuss with anyone other than TLC staff.
    Boundaries - Taking a personal interest in a student builds trust, when guided by appropriate, professional boundaries. 
    The following actions are not appropriate for volunteers:

    • Loaning money to a student or their family
    • Meeting at a location other than that arranged by TLC staff
    • Using volunteer sessions to practice foreign language skills
    • Giving inappropriate or expensive gifts
    • Inappropriate physical contact.

    This is not intended to be an exhaustive list, but to establish the parameters of acceptable behavior.

     

    TLC prides itself in being a safe, inclusive space for students of all backgrounds to be their true, authentic selves. TLC staff retain the right to determine the appropriate disciplinary response in all cases when the code of conduct is not followed.

  • Logistics and Program Interests

    TLC primary need for volunteers is in the K-12 Tutoring program and Adult ESL program. These programs require a commitment of the same day and time for the duration of the school year. In order to support students in making growth, we find that having a steady, consistent and reliable volunteer tutor is key.  We also recognize that schedules change and may need adjustments.  If you are here for the majority of the school year, with the exception of 5 weeks.  We think tutoring would be a great fit.  This is where we have the greatest need.   If your work or travel schedules don't allow for that consistency, we ask you to think about finding a friend or family member to split the volunteer opportunity with or consider the administrative volunteer role that has ample flexibility.

    This school year, staff will be sending a bi-monthly email with an updated schedule of volunteer needs. In addition to that email, staff will keep a list of volunteers interested in different roles to call if an opportunity comes up.

    Parent ESL Scheduling Update: 

    ESL classes will continue being offered through a one-hour per week small group led by a volunteer and up to four parents. If you are interested in facilitating a small ESL group, please take the times below into consideration as you input your availability.

  • Wyoming Mandated Reporter Law

  • Wyoming state law mandates that any individual over the age of 18 who suspects child/vulnerable adult abuse, neglect or exploitation is required to report their observations.
    ​
    At TLC, this is extremely rare, but in the instance that you do suspect a student is at risk, you are required to inform a TLC staff member of your observations, or if a student makes a disclosure to you. The TLC staff will then document your observation and work with the family to connect them with resources, including the Department of Family Services, as needed.

  • Release From Liability

    I am aware that as a volunteer I expose myself to potential hazards which include but are not limited to: accidents, illness, property damage, etc. I am voluntarily participating in this service with the knowledge of the potential hazards involved and hereby agree to accept any and all risks of injury. I agree that my assignees, heirs, distributes, guardians and other legal representatives will not make a claim against, or sue for injury or damage resulting from the negligence or other acts , howsoever caused, by any employee, agent, or volunteer contractor of the organization as a result of my participation as a volunteer. I hereby release Teton Literacy Center and its officers, volunteers and agents from all actions, claims, or demands that I, my assignees, heirs, guardians and legal representatives now have or may hereafter have for injury resulting from my participation as a volunteer. I have carefully read this agreement and fully understand its contents. I am aware that this is a release of liability and I sign it of my own free will.

    The Teton Literacy Center may photograph, interview or videotape you to use for volunteer instruction, marketing purposes and/or program fundraising. Please indicate below whether your writings or photograph may be used for these purposes: Participant does hereby grant and convey unto Teton Literacy Center all right, title, and interest in any and all photographic images, video and/or audio recordings made by TLC during the Participant's activities with TLC, including, but not limited to, any royalties, proceeds, or other benefits derived from such photographs or recordings. I further grant to the Teton Literacy Center and its representatives the right to reproduce, use, exhibit, display, broadcast, distribute and create derivative works of these images and recordings in any media now known or later developed as well as my/their name for promoting, publicizing or explaining the Teton Literacy Center and its activities and for administrative or educational purposes.
