Thank you for your interest in the Lawrence Murray, Sr Scholarship. This $1,000.00 scholarship is for any graduating senior who is African-American, resides in Chester, PA, maintains a 3.0 GPA, and has a focus on community service.
Lawrence Murray Sr. was the founder and driving force behind the creation of Green Lawn Cemetery located in Chester Twp. PA. Lawrence was born enslaved in Chestertown, MD in 1861. He later was freed, married his wife, Mollie, and along with their two sons settled in Chester, PA, becoming a highly respected community leader.
Green Lawn Cemetery was born out of necessity. Due to the discriminatory practices at the turn of the 20th century, cemeteries were segregated and the two small existing cemeteries for African Americans at the time were quickly being filled. Lawrence and his wife Mollie, purchased the land for Green Lawn, creating the only cemetery in Chester and surrounding areas for African Americans. Today, Green Lawn is the final resting place for approximately two hundred fifty veterans who represent each branch of our country's military and served in every major conflict from the Civil War to the war in Vietnam.
