Essay Contest
Essay prompt: Why Does Washington Park Matter?
Submit an original essay answering this prompt. Winners will be announced at the 125th Anniversary Jubilee on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at the Boat House in Washington Park. You need not be present to win.
Competition divisions
- 8-14 years: 300-500 words
- 15-18 years: 500- 750 words
- Adult (over 18): 750-1000 words
Submission Details
Essays must be typed and not exceed the word count in each division.
Essays may be submitted below in Word or PDF format.
Please don't use your actual name in the essay or file name, as we want you to remain anonmyous with the judges.
Entry Deadline
The contest begins on May 15, 2024. All entries must be received by 6:00 PM Mountain Daylight Savings Time (MDT) on June 30, 2024
Judging
Essays will be judged by a qualified panel of librarians, educators and writers based on creativity, quality, originality, responsiveness to the prompt and overall impact.
FANS of Washington Park will notify winners via the contact information provided at the time of entry.
Prizes
Each division will have a first, and third prize winner.
- First place: $50.00 gift card
- Second place: $35.00 gift card
- Third place: $25.00 gift card
Greet Magazine will publish winning essays.
Rules
- By submitting, you are agreeing to all contest rules
- No Board Members of FANS of Washington Park or their immediate families are eligible to win.
- You retain the rights to your essay but FANS of Washington Park may use the essay in its entirety or excerpts in our newsletter.
- Any quotations or copyrighted material used in the essays must be identified properly. Failure to identify non-original material will result in disqualification
- AI generated essays are not allowed
Conditions of Entry
All entrants hold the Sponsors and their respective volunteers (the “Indemnified Parties”) harmless from and against all claims of any nature arising in connection with entrant’s participation in the contest and acceptance or use of a prize. The Indemnified Parties are not liable for any costs, damages, injuries, or other claims incurred because of entrants’ participation in the contest or winner’s acceptance and usage of a prize. The Indemnified Parties are not responsible for incomplete or misdirected entries, technical or network malfunctions or failures, or causes beyond their control. Entrants are solely responsible for their entries. Entrants may not submit materials that introduce any software viruses, worms or other programs designed to damage software, hardware or telecommunications equipment or are off-topic, partisan-political, contain advertising, nudity, personal attacks or expletives, or is otherwise abusive, threatening, unlawful, harassing, discriminatory, libelous, obscene, false, sexually explicit, or that infringes on the rights of any third party.
The contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law. FANS of Washington Park reserves the right to cancel the contest or modify these rules at its discretion. In the event of a dispute regarding the winners, the FANS of Washington Park reserves the right to award or not award the prizes in its sole discretion. FANS of Washington Park reserves the right to disqualify any entrant whose entry or conduct appears in any way to: inhibit the enjoyment of others; tamper with the competition; violate these rules or other applicable law or regulation; infringe on the rights of third parties; or act in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Decisions of FANS of Washington Park are final and binding.
