Arts and Healing:The Watauga Arts Council (WAC) is partnering with the Art Committee of the Cancer Center Resource Alliance Advisory Board to organize a rotating exhibition for the hallways of the Seby Jones Cancer Center at the Appalachian Regional Medical Center Campus located on Deerfield Road in Boone, NC. The purpose of these exhibitions is to help patients and families engage in the healing process. Studies show a direct link between the presence of artwork and the brain's reaction to pain, stress, and anxiety, the Cancer Center is joining the ranks of hospitals that are dedicating space to display artwork toward this goal. Thank you for joining us in our endeavor to encourage patients, loved ones, and staff of the Seby Jones Cancer Center.

  • Arts and Healing Program Function and Agreement:

By participating in this program, the artist agrees to the following:

    1. Exhibits will be selected by the WAC and approved by the Art Committee of the Cancer Center when necessary.
    2. Exhibits run for three months. The artist will not remove work without providing a replacement during the duration of the 3 month exhibit.
    3. Art exhibition will be in three hallways where hanging systems have been installed.
    4. The Artist will use the label template provided by WAC to offer a complete listing of the exhibited works, including title, medium, and price. WAC will provide a copy of this listing to the Cancer Center. The Artist will also supply a bio for display in the lobby.
    5. The Cancer Center reserves the right to elect not to exhibit specific works of art if they feel that the content is not conducive to the healing process, in which case the artist(s) will be asked to propose other works for exhibition.
    6. Work will be delivered to the Cancer Center at a mutually agreed-upon date and time, usually on the same day that works from the previous exhibit are removed. WAC will facilitate hanging the work in coordination with the artist and the Cancer Center staff. At the end of the exhibit period, the artist will pick up their work from the Cancer Center at a mutually agreed upon time/day.
    7. The artist’s bio and photograph will be displayed in the Cancer Center's main lobby, and the Arts Council's contact information will be included.
    8. Works of art may be offered for purchase. Should a work of art sell during the exhibition time, the commission rate of 25% will be due to the Arts Council, and possession of the work by the purchaser can only take place after the exhibit leaves the Cancer Center’s premises. The artist agrees to give 10% of the sale of any work sold within six months of the exhibit if the purchaser contacts the artist because they discovered them at the Cancer Center.
    9. Any work not picked up from Seby Jones Cancer Center will be brought to Watauga Arts Council. If it is left at WAC longer than 30 days past the exhibit close date, WAC will consider it a donation and reserve the right to sell the work.
    10. The Watauga County Arts Council and Seby Jones Cancer Center will take all possible precautions to ensure the safety of the works exhibited in this program, including limited insurance coverage for fire and theft and damages incurred during transport, but cannot be responsible for other occurrences. The
    11. Watauga Arts Council 828-264-1789 director@watauga-arts.org Arts Council insures the work, but if there is damage or theft, there is a $1,000 deductible for each occurrence. It is suggested that artists procure separate insurance to help cover the cost of the deductible.
    12. Should there be damage, loss, or theft of a piece of art, the artist should be prepared to present proof of the work's market value through documentation of comparable pieces' sales, previous gallery contracts establishing value, or an appraiser's professional opinion. If, in the judgment of the WAC, the stated value of a work submitted to the program is questionable, documentation of value may be required in advance.
    13. The artist must also agree to and sign the attached Art Display Agreement Waiver of Loss and Damage provided by Appalachian Regional Healthcare System, and a signed copy will be provided to the Cancer Center for their files.
