Purpose of Course

The purpose of this online hazardous materials training course is to equip workers with a general awareness of hazardous materials and over-all port security. After completing this online course workers will be able to safely recognize and identify hazardous materials and have port security awareness.

PLEASE NOTE: As of Tuesday, November 28, 2017, any Worker that fails this online exam two times in a row will be required to take an in-person HazMat classroom training course. The Worker will need to contact their Local to confirm the next scheduled in-person HazMat classroom training course. Description of Course

All workers must take Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Training. The class consists of training on hazardous materials and safety topics relevant to the longshore industry. The worker must complete this online course and pass the online examination that follows the online course with a minimum score of 75% in order to work in the industry.

OSHA requires Hazardous Materials training and certification of each worker every three years. [49 CFR 172.704(c)(2)]. If a worker does not maintain this certification, the worker cannot attend any additional training or work in the industry. This certification is offered regularly in all ports to ensure compliance with this OSHA mandated requirement.

Management Hazardous Material

This online class includes and satisfies the following:
- Overview of the DOT Hazmat Training Regulation (49CFR 172.704) and the DOL Hazcom Training Regulation (29CFR 1910.1200).
- Protection of employees, the public, and the environment.
- Communication of hazardous materials through the regulations, labels and placards, shipping papers, warnings, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Emergency Response Guide Book.
- Forms of hazardous materials and chemicals (gases, vapors, liquids).
- Dangers of hazardous materials and chemicals (health hazards and physical hazards).
- Safe handling of hazardous materials and chemicals.
- Review of material presented via individual test and certification.

HazMat Training Curriculum

Personal Protective Equipment on the Waterfront (Video - 13:53)

This video introduces the variety of different PPE’s and their importance to the overall safety of the workforce. Emphasis is placed on hardhats, high-visibility vests, steel-toe safety shoes, and proper clothing for the task. Also included are references to other PPE devices such as gloves, dust masks, and fall protection.

Port Security – We’re Counting on You (Video - 27:35)

Included in this video are discussions on MARSAC levels, recognizing threats to the facility, how to handle questions from strangers about the facility, and participating in drills and exercises.

These videos focus on making the worker aware that they are working with, or around, hazardous materials and the responsibility they have in recognizing and reporting leaks and spills. This is done by giving the worker a basic understanding of the Global Harmonizing System and Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Additionally, the worker is notified of the Hazardous Materials “Right to Understand” Communication that says the worker is entitled to be told that they are working with hazardous materials and provided the appropriate PPE’s to perform the functions of the job safely.

HazMat Examination

The 24 question HazMat examination has 19 questions covering port security and 5 questions covering over HazMat. You must score at least 75% on the examination to receive credit for this course.

Reminder - HazMat certifications expire every three years.
