The Exhibitions Program is a core part of the historic Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia, part of the greater Washington, DC area. Workhouse Building W-16 hosts three gallery spaces; the McGuireWoods Gallery on the second floor, and the Vulcan and Muse Galleries on the first floor.
This application is for Exhibition Proposal submissions.
ENTRY GUIDELINES
This open call facilitates submissions from parties interested in having a solo or group exhibition at Workhouse in Building W-16. Applications are reviewed every six months, in January and June of each calendar year, with notification of acceptance occurring in July and February.
January 2025 review deadline: December 31, 2024
Exhibitions will be placed in galleries based on medium, quantity of artworks, and availability in the exhibitions calendar.
The non-refundable entry fee is $30.
Open to all artists 18 years and older.
The Exhibitions Manager will make final determinations with input from jurors and colleagues.
Exhibitions will be selected based upon information and images provided in this application.
GALLERY GUIDELINES
Size is limited to artwork that fits through a standard door (30" x 80").
All 2D work must be framed and include hanging wire. Framing standards will be sent upon acceptance of your work. Work not meeting these framing standards will not be hung.
Walls are single layer drywall - Artwork weighing more than 20 pounds must be installed on a stud.
Large scale installations shall be installed by artist. Artworks to be assembled on site by Workhouse Arts Center must come with detailed instructions, provided by the artist.
Floor works must be firmly stable.
Hanging 3D installations weighing more than 10 pounds must be installed on an I-Beam, which requires the use of a 12-foot latter. Hanging installations of this manner must be installed by the artist.
Walls are approximately 8 feet tall and do not meet the vaulted ceiling, except for the East Muse wall. Sound travels easily between spaces.
Events and rentals may be held in McGuireWoods and Muse Galleries – artwork cannot be placed in the center of these galleries, or have a footprint of greater than 3 feet from the wall.
Workhouse reserves the right to close any gallery for a limited number of short-term private events.

The Exhibitions Manager and jury will be the sole parties to decide which gallery is offered for exhibition. Optional: Artist(s) may include the preferred gallery in your exhibitions proposal, stating your rationale.
McGuireWoods Gallery
Access to electrical outlets on the East wall and North walls of East and West Wings.
Shades installed on East and West wing windows.
Stage and piano occupy South end of gallery cannot be (re)moved.
Vulcan Gallery
Access to electrical outlets on West and South walls (shared walls with Muse) – No electrical outlets are available on East walls.
Muse Gallery
Access to electrical outlets on West wall (near stage) and North wall (shared walls with Vulcan).
Shades only installed on West facing windows of Muse.
Stage with projector screen located on West wall cannot be (re)moved.
TERMS OF ENTRY
Photography and Permissions
The artist(s) verifies ownwership of art and/or copyright(s) to the artwork being submitted and therefore allows Workhouse Arts Center to display the artwork in its galleries.
If accepted, the artist(s) approves Workhouse Arts Center to photograph and/or use submitted photographs of the artwork for advertising, educational, or archival purposes online and in print, without monetary compensation. Images of artwork may be cropped to fit advertisements and credits will be included when possible.
Sales
A 30% commission on sales will be taken by Workhouse Arts Center. The artist(s) must provide a federal W-9 tax form to receive their 70%.
Delivery and Pick Up
Artists are responsible for transporting their work to and from the Workhouse Arts Center and insuring it while in transit. Works may be shipped, or hand delivered at a mutually agreed upon date.
Works shipped must come in reusable containers and packaging for re-packing and return shipping must be included, as well as instructions for how to repack the work for return shipping. The Workhouse is not responsible for any damages that may occur during shipping. Artist must provide a pre-paid return shipping label to cover the return shipping costs.
Unsold artwork must be picked up, or will be shipped, within 30 days of the end of the exhibition.
