  • Immunisations

Immunisations are not currently required as part of the IME, unless special arrangements apply.

Parents must, however be strongly encouraged to consider immunising their children against Hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), poliomyelitis, haemophilus influenza type-b (Hib), pneumococcal and meningococcal infections, mumps, measles, rubella and varicella (chickenpox). Rotavirus vaccination is encouraged in infants between two and eight months of age.

Parents are advised to complete outstanding immunisations before they travel to Australia. Parents are advised to take their children’s immunisation records to Australia, as these will be required for school enrolment and other settlement related purposes, including provision of family benefits.

Rubella vaccination is strongly recommended for women of child-bearing age; however, it is contraindicated if they are already pregnant.

Live vaccines are generally contraindicated for most people who are severely immunocompromised and must not be administered in these cases, unless consultation with a specialist has occurred.

  • Would you like any vaccines?
  • What vaccinations would you like?
  • Please note that YEHS’s vaccination service is offered as an optional add-on. It is not a mandatory component of the visa medical assessment, and it is not a requirement of the relevant immigration authorities.

  • Consent for Physical Examination

  • Some services at Your Excellent Health Service include a physical examination that may require you to undress down to your underwear so the clinician can examine relevant areas safely and appropriately. Please note your Visa medical does not include a genital examination for any reason but a breast examination may be required in certain circumstances, which will be clearly explained to you by the clinician.

You have the right to be offered a chaperone for any examination where you may need to undress.

  • Please note you may request a female doctor or same sex doctor but this must be done before the appointment day and is subject to availability as we are unable to make any arrangements other than our routine doctor bookings.

You may request a chaperone to be present at your physical examination.

We will be providing a private changing room or a curtained-off area. Gowns or sheets will be provided to clients on request.

  • Please be advised that:

    • Physical examination may involve touch and may cause mild discomfort
    • Declining parts of the examination may limit the clinicians ability to complete the assessment or may need to record the assessment as incomplete.
    • You may elect to have a friend / family member present

    You are entitled to:

    • An explanation of what examination is proposed and why
    • You can ask questions at any time
    • You can ask to pause / stop the assessment at any time
    • Privacy to undress and dress: To wear shorts or keep covered as much as possible to maintain dignity
    • Limitation of the assessment to what is clinically necessary for your assessment

  • Consent - HIV

    Visa Medical
  • You have been advised to carry out an HIV-test. This would be as required as part of your Immigration Medical Examination (IME) or as determined by your doctor for other medical purposes.

Your consent would be required to proceed. Please read this sheet carefully to help you decide whether you would like to be tested or not.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the cause of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). All persons infected with HIV can spread it to others through unprotected sex, needle sharing, and donating Blood or other tissues. Infected mothers can also spread HIV to newborns.

  • This test detects antibodies to HIV, not the virus itself. Antibodies are the body's reaction to the virus.

    • A POSITIVE test means that a person is infected with HIV and can pass it to others. By itself, a positive test does not mean that a person has AIDS, which is the most advanced stage of HIV infection.
    • A NEGATIVE test means that antibodies to HIV were not detected. This usually means that the person is not infected with HIV. In some cases, however, the infection may have happened too recently for the test to turn positive. The Blood test usually turns positive within 1 month after infection and in almost all cases within 3 months. Therefore, if you were infected very recently, a negative test result could be wrong.
    • FALSE results (a negative test in someone who is infected, or a positive test in someone who is not infected) are rare.
    • INDETERMINATE results (when it is unclear whether the test is positive or negative) are also rare. When a test result does not seem to make sense, a repeat test or special confirmatory tests may help to determine whether a person is or is not infected.
  • HIV testing is a vital component of health management and disease prevention. It provides individuals with crucial information to safeguard their own health and the well-being of others. The following are the key benefits of undergoing HIV testing:

    • Access to Medical Treatment: Early detection allows individuals to benefit from medications that can delay or prevent the progression of AIDS and other serious infections, such as Tuberculosis.
    • Informed Reproductive Choices: Test results enable individuals to make educated decisions regarding contraception and pregnancy.
    • Comprehensive Health Assessment: Infected individuals should receive a thorough medical evaluation, including immune system testing, to facilitate tailored health care recommendations from their providers.
    • Promotion of Safer Practices: Awareness of one's status supports adherence to safer sexual practices, thereby protecting both partners and individuals from further risk.
    • Preparation for Future Relationships: Knowing one's status before entering a new sexual relationship or planning a pregnancy ensures responsible decision-making.
    • Peace of Mind: Testing provides reassurance to those who are not infected, reducing uncertainty and promoting mental well-being.
  • Undergoing HIV testing is an important health decision, but it is equally essential to consider the potential emotional and social impacts. The following points outline key factors to consider before being tested:
    • Emotional Impact: Many individuals with positive or indeterminate test results may experience stress, anxiety, or depression. Even those with negative results may engage in unsafe behaviours, increasing their future risk of HIV infection.
    • Concerns About Privacy: Some individuals fear their test results could be disclosed improperly, leading to potential discrimination.
    1. Consider your social support network, such as family and friends, to help navigate the outcomes of the testing process.
    2. Assess your insurance needs and coverage to ensure you can access appropriate care and support if needed. Carefully evaluating these considerations can help you prepare for the testing process and its potential outcomes.
  • If your test is positive and you do not call or return to learn the result, we will try to contact you to tell you the result and provide you with appropriate counselling. If your HIV test is positive, persons with whom you have had sex or have shared needles must be informed that they may be infected and that they should be tested for HIV. If you are unable to inform your partner(s) or do not wish to do so, we can do it for you without disclosing your identity.

If your test is positive, you will need to be seen by an HIV specialist. You can do this by speaking to your NHS GP or can arrange this privately (outside the NHS) if you prefer.

  • We keep a record of the health care services we provide to you. You may ask us to see and copy that record. You may also ask us to correct that record. We will not disclose your record to others unless you direct us to do so or unless the law authorizes or compels us to do so.
  • Your test result would be shared with the government of the country you intend to travel to as part of the visa application process.

Your data remains secure and will continue to be safe and secure as per UKGDPR, EUGDPR and the relevant Data Protection laws of the country.
