Title of Study: Citizen Math Impact Study: Developing Informed, Productive Citizens in Math Class

Your child’s school is participating in a research study, the Citizen Math Impact Study, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. WestEd and American Institutes for Research (AIR) are non-profit research organizations leading the study. We are working with participating schools to learn more about math teachers’ instruction and how their instruction improves students’ math skills and thoughts about math. About 120 schools with students in grades 6, 7, and 8 across the U.S. will participate in this study. As part of the study, we will invite your child to participate in a short survey. We will also ask your district to provide student administrative records, including test scores and other background information strictly for the purpose of this research study. This form describes the study activities to you and lets you know how to get more information. We only ask you to sign and return this form to your child’s math teacher if you do not give permission for your child to participate in the survey.

What will happen in my child’s classroom? During the 2025 spring term, students will be asked to complete a survey about their thoughts towards learning math and their math class. The survey will take no longer than 20 minutes and will be done during regular class time.

What will my child do? Your child will be invited to complete the survey. If you or your child choose to opt-out, they will complete an alternative activity during class time. Your child will receive the same math instruction and participate fully in class even if you or your child chooses to opt-out from the study.

Does my child have to participate in this study? No. It is completely voluntary. There are no penalties if your child does not participate in this study. If you wish your child not to participate, we will not invite them to complete the survey.

Can my child or I stop being in the study? Yes. You or your child can decide to stop at any time. You also have the right to withdraw your child from the study at any time if you change your mind later. If you decide to stop participating in the study, you can contact your child’s teacher or the researcher (listed below). There are no penalties for withdrawing early from the study. Your child can stop participating in the survey at any point.

What student administrative records will be accessed by the study? The research team will work with your district to access your child’s records including student name, student ID, grade, state or district assessment scores, math course performance, race/ethnicity, gender, as well as free or reduced-price lunch, English learner and individualized educational plan (IEP) status.

Will my child’s privacy be protected? Yes. Only the research team will have access to your students’ survey responses and administrative records. WestEd and AIR follow the confidentiality and data-protection requirements of the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Fair Information Practices Act. Records will be kept strictly confidential in a secured, password protected portal. The research team will anonymize student survey responses and records so that no student can be identified in analyses. All reports prepared for this study will summarize findings across the sample. This means that none of the responses will be associated with a specific individual or school. After the end of the study, we will destroy any records that contain personally identifying information like your child’s name and student ID.

Are there any risks to being in the study? We do not believe there will be any additional risks to your child beyond those associated with your child’s normal school activities.

Are there any potential benefits? This is a research study. Your child will not receive any direct benefits from participating in this study. The results from this study may increase our knowledge about teacher instruction, as well as how to improve student math learning.

Su hijo/a recibirá la misma enseñanza de matemáticas y participará plenamente en clase, aunque usted o su hijo/a decidan no participar en el estudio.

¿Es obligatorio que mi hijo/a participe en este estudio? No. Es totalmente voluntario. No hay penalizaciones si su hijo/a no participa en este estudio. Si desea que su hijo/a no participe, no le invitaremos a responder a la encuesta.

¿Podemos mi hijo/a o yo retirarnos del estudio? Sí. Usted o su hijo/a pueden abandonar el estudio en cualquier momento. También tiene derecho a retirar a su hijo/a del estudio en cualquier momento si cambia de opinión más adelante. Si decide dejar de participar en el estudio, puede ponerse en contacto con el/la docente de su hijo/a o con el investigador (indicados a continuación). No hay penalizaciones por retirarse antes de tiempo del estudio. Su hijo/a puede abandonar el estudio en cualquier momento.

¿A qué expedientes administrativos de los estudiantes tendrá acceso el estudio?
