    Say:

    “ I’m going to check your eyes.”

    “Keep your head still and follow this stimulus with your eyes only.”

    “ Keep following the stimulus with your eyes until I tell you to stop.”

    Instructions to Officer:

    • Hold stimulus 12”-15” from the suspects nose and slightly above the eye level.

    • Move stimulus across entire field of vision to make sure eyes are tracking together.

    • Check to see if both pupils are equal in size.

    Lack of Smooth Pursuit

    • Check left eye first.
    • Move stimulus in a 2-second movement.
    • Move stimulus all the way across to check right eye for lack of smooth pursuit.
    • (2 seconds out and 2 seconds back.)
    • Repeat procedure.

    Maximum Deviation

    • Begin with left eye.
    • Take eye as far into the corner as possible.
    • Hold at maximum deviation for 4 seconds looking for a distinct nystagmus.
    • Move stimulus all the way across the face and check right eye.
    • Repeat procedure.

    Onset Prior to 45 Degrees

    • Check suspects left eye first.
    • Move the stimulus in a 4-second movement to reach 45-degree mark.
    • Check suspect’s right eye next.
    • Repeat procedure.

    Walk-and-Turn Instructions: 

    Say:

    • “Place your left foot on the line.” (Demonstrate by placing your foot on the line.)(Line is real or imaginary.)


    • “Place your right foot on the line ahead of the left foot, with heel of right foot against toe of left foot.” (Demonstrate)


    • “Place your arms down at your side.”


    • “Keep this position until I tell you to begin. Do not start to walk until I tell you to do so.”


    • “Do you understand the instructions so far?”


    • “When I tell you to start, take nine heel-to-toe steps down the line, turn around, and take nine heel-to-toe steps back up the line.” (Demonstrate 2 or 3 heel-to-toe steps.)


    • “When you turn keep the front foot on the line, and turn by taking a series of small steps with the other foot, like this.” (Demonstrate.)


    • “While you are walking, keep your arms at your sides, watch you’re your feet at all times, and count your steps out loud.”


    • “Once you start walking, don’t stop until you have completed the test”.
    • “Do you understand the instructions?”


    • “Begin, and count your first step from the heel-to-toe position as ‘One.’”

    One Leg Stand

    Say:

    Please stand with your feet together and your arms down at your sides, like this.”(Demonstrate)


    • “Do not start to perform the test until I tell you to do so.”


    • “Do you understand the instructions so far?”


    • “When I tell you to start, raise one leg, either leg, approximately 6” off the ground with your toes pointed out.” (Demonstrate)


    • “You must keep both legs straight, arms at your sides.”


    • “While holding that position, count out loud for thirty seconds in the following manner: “one thousand and one, one thousand and two, until told to stop.” (Demonstrate a count, as follows: one thousand and one, one thousand and two, etc…Remember not to look at your foot when conducting the demonstration!)


    • “Keep your arms at your sides at all times and keep watching the raised foot.”


    • “Do you understand?”


    • “Go ahead and perform the test.” (Time the test; stop the test after thirty seconds.)
