The 2-day PEER Classrooms at BC Family Hearing Resource Centre this April help prepare children starting kindergarten in September 2026.

The children’s classroom sessions are for children with any level of support. The classroom sessions focus on growing their:

Identity, while building self-esteem and confidence
Self-advocacy around access needs
Responsibility & independence with hearing equipment
Social connections

Children will meet other kids and adults who are deaf and hard of hearing just like them. They will also learn about obstacles that make it hard to understand others and strategies they can use to overcome these, no matter their mode of communication. Some activities will be introduced in English, others will in American Sign Language (ASL). An ASL/English voice interpreter will be present for all sessions.

There are two options for attending the PEER classroom:

In-person on Saturday, April 18th AND Sunday, April 19th from 9am-1pm in Surrey OR
Online on Saturday, April 18th from 9am-12pm via Zoom

Parent participation is required for all classroom sessions.

In-person classroom option: Families must attend both days of the program. We do not have the capacity to provide childcare for siblings, and so families will need to find care for their other children. The exception to this are babes-in-arms, who can remain with their parents.

* Please note – those travelling from out of town are responsible for making your own arrangements for accommodation and transportation to/from the centre.

Lunch will be provided for both parents and children each day. Please feel free to bring your own lunch if you have specific dietary restrictions. Please remember that we are a nut-free facility.

The online classroom option: This is a great alternative for families unable to attend the in-person classroom. The morning will be broken into two short and engaging online sessions for children and parents, followed by a parent only session. A Zoom link will be provided closer to the date.
