Lonergan Fellowship Application

Lonergan Fellowships are awarded annually in support of research projects relating to the work of Bernard J. F. Lonergan, S.J. The Fellowships include a stipend of $10,000 a semester ($20,000 for a full academic year).

Preference will be given to scholars who have earned a Ph.D., or a similar advanced degree, and who will be able to be in residence at Boston College for one or two semesters. In addition to the stipend, the Lonergan Institute offers housing to a limited number of visiting scholars in a peaceful, communal setting located on campus.

Applicants should include in separate document attachments at the end of this application (1) a curriculum vitae, and (2) a 500-word research or writing proposal addressed to Dr. Jeremy Wilkins, Director, and the Lonergan Fellowship Committee, which outlines the applicant’s project and the resources at Boston College on which it will draw, as well as its contribution to the larger field of Lonergan studies. Finally, (3) a letter of recommendation from an established scholar acquainted with the applicant’s qualifications, work, and experience in Lonergan studies should be emailed separately by the recommender to bclonergan@gmail.com.

A Lonergan Fellowship includes a modest stipend of $10,000 a semester, or $20,000 for the full academic year. For visiting Fellows from outside of the greater Boston area, the Fellowship also includes free housing at our convenient on-campus communal residence house, where Fellows have private bedrooms, and share a kitchen, restroom, and dining and living spaces. Fellows are responsible for buying their own groceries and preparing their own meals and any other personal expenses, but any costs associated with the on-campus residence are covered by the Lonergan Institute.

Lonergan Fellowships do not include health insurance. For Fellows who require a J1 Visa to travel to the U.S. for the Fellowship, you are required to have traveler's health insurance (and if any dependents are travelling on a J2, you are required to cover their health insurance, as well). There is not a reasonable way to purchase insurance in the U.S. and so traveler's insurance must be obtained from your home country.

The requirements of the Fellowship are modest. Fellows are expected to attend the weekly Fellows Seminar with other Fellows and Lonergan studies faculty, and present either a current research draft or lead discussion for a reading on Lonergan just once during the semester. It is not possible to teach while on a Lonergan Fellowship or otherwise have an official position at Boston College outside of the Fellowship. Fellows receive full library access and access to the research room in the Lonergan Center, and are invited to attend public lectures held by the university. The Lonergan community at Boston College hosts several events throughout the semester, as well, where Fellows can meet M.A. and Ph.D. students working on Lonergan, in addition to other faculty.
