  • Lonergan Workshop 52 (2025): Consciousness

    Proposal submission deadline: April 1, 2025
  • The 2025 Workshop Committee invites paper proposals (500 words or less) on the theme of consciousness within and in dialogue with the work of Bernard Lonergan, SJ. Paper and panel proposals may consider (but are not limited to) addressing the following topics:

    • Methods for the study of consciousness
    • Consciousness and neuroscience; philosophical implications of MRI research and/or the bilateral brain
    • Evolutionary perspectives; animal consciousness
    • Consciousness and artificial intelligence
    • Consciousness and contemplative practices; mystical consciousness; belonging in the universe; the reasons of the heart
    • Consciousness and authenticity or genuineness; bias and cultural decline; the flight from understanding
    • Levels of consciousness; consciousness and intentionality; objects and contents of consciousness (does consciousness require an object?)
    • Differentiations of consciousness and the stages of meaning; consciousness and development in dogma or theological understanding
    • The consciousness of Christ; consciousness and the Trinity
    • Poetry, music, architecture; art as “a fundamental element in the freedom of consciousness itself.”

    Proposals should be 500 words or less and can be in the form of a paper abstract or a panel proposal. Proposals are due no later than April 1, 2025.
