BEVA Application for Inclusion on the BEVA lists of practices experienced in the insemination of chilled/frozen semen

The purpose of the BEVA Approved AI List is to provide the public with a means of identifying Veterinary Surgeons who are experienced in the insemination of chilled / frozen semen who are working at Practices which meet the minimum required standards specified by BEVA. Two separate lists are maintained: (i) those Practices approved for the insemination of fresh and chilled semen only and (ii) those Practices approved for the insemination of fresh, chilled and frozen semen.

Section A of this application should be completed by all Practices applying for inclusion on either list. Practices applying for inclusion on the frozen semen list should also complete Section B.

SECTION A (to be completed by ALL Practices)

Veterinary Surgeon with overall responsibility for AI within the Practice (name and qualifications):

Declaration (to be signed by the Veterinary Surgeon with overall responsibility for AI)

• To be identified as meeting the minimum requirements considered necessary for the handling and insemination of fresh/chilled equine semen.
• All Veterinary Surgeons who will be involved in AI have been listed above and have read the current BEVA Code of Practice on Artificial Insemination in Horse Breeding and the current HBLB Codes of Practice.
• All Veterinary Surgeons who will be performing AI are listed above, have the necessary experience to satisfy the requirements of the BEVA Code of Practice on Artificial Insemination in Horse Breeding and have attended New Graduate and Refresher Courses as required by and specified in Section A (Note 2) of this application.
• I agree to the Practice and Premises being inspected by representatives appointed for the purpose by BEVA (see note 3)
• I confirm that the Practice and Premises identified above meet the minimum requirements considered necessary for the handling and insemination of fresh and chilled semen as specified in the BEVA Code of Practice on Artificial Insemination in Horse Breeding, and specifically that:

I hereby apply for the above Practice and Premises to be included on the BEVA AI lists, and

For mares admitted to the Practice for the insemination period, the Practice has sufficient accommodation for housing/exercising mares. ii.There is an undercover insemination area. iii.The insemination area is fitted with stocks or, failing that, there are suitable facilities to ensure that the mare can be adequately restrained to prevent injury to her or to the staff involved in the insemination. iv.There is a room close to the insemination area where paperwork can be verified and where semen can be assessed, handled and prepared for insemination in hygienic conditions. v.An appropriate ultrasound scanner is available for examining the reproductive tract of the mare. vi.Sufficient staff are available to help restrain the mare (and foal) for examination of the mare (see note 4 vii.Before each and every insemination the inseminating Veterinary Surgeon verifies the origin and health status of the semen to be inseminated, as specified in the HBLB Codes of Practice (2017 and later versions), and that no semen is inseminated unless its health status is documented.

SECTION B (to be completed only by those Practices applying to be approved for insemination of frozen semen as well as of fresh and chilled semen)

Declaration (to be signed by the Veterinary Surgeon with overall responsibility for AI within the practice):

I confirm that the Practice and premises identified above meet the minimum requirements considered necessary for the handling and insemination of frozen semen as specified in the BEVA Code of Practice on Artificial Insemination in Horse Breeding, and specifically that:

(i)The Practice has available adequate facilities for the safe storage and transport of frozen semen and has access to a reliable supply of liquid nitrogen (ii)There are sufficient staff available to help restrain the mare (and foal) for examination of the mare (see note 4) at whatever hour it may be necessary to examine her. (iii)There are enough suitably experienced veterinary surgeons available in the Practice, and they work/reside sufficiently close at hand to the premises where the semen is to be inseminated to ensure that mares can be checked as often as necessary and that insemination is carried out at the optimum time. (iv) There is a room close to the insemination area equipped with appropriate facilities for handling frozen semen where semen can be thawed, assessed and prepared for insemination in hygienic conditions. (v)Accurate records are kept of all frozen semen, which is stored at the Practice, and of the instructions for thawing for each insemination dose. (vi)Full facilities for the insemination of frozen semen are available to visiting mares referred to the Practice from elsewhere. (vii)The current BEVA Code of Practice on Artificial Insemination in Horse Breeding will be complied with when frozen semen is being handled and inseminated.

Note 1: Each Practice on the BEVA Lists must nominate one Veterinary Surgeon within the Practice

to take overall responsibility for AI. This person should be a senior member of the Practice who is experienced in equine artificial insemination. This person must ensure that all the requirements specified in the application for inclusion on the BEVA lists are met, and that each Veterinary Surgeon performing AI within the Practice receives appropriate training from within the Practice and attends the appropriate BEVA training / refresher courses (see Note 2 If the Veterinary Surgeon with overall responsibility for AI retires or leaves the Practice, BEVA must be notified immediately, and a new Veterinary Surgeon nominated as having responsibility for AI within the Practice. Note 2: Before they may be included on the BEVA AI lists, newly qualified Veterinary Surgeons and

those with no previous experience of Equine AI must attend one of the listed BEVA AI courses. Veterinary Surgeons with previous experience of Equine AI, those already included on the BEVA lists, and Veterinary Surgeons who have attended any of the other BEVA AI courses and have been included on the BEVA lists must all attend the BEVA AI Refresher course at least once every 4 years. Failure to attend such courses will result in removal from the lists. If any Veterinary Surgeon listed as performing AI retires or leaves the Practice, BEVA must be notified immediately. Failure to keep BEVA informed of such changes will result in the Practice being removed from the lists. BEVA will specify on the lists not only the Practices which meet the required standards but also the names of those Veterinary Surgeons within the Practice nominated in Section A of this form who have met the CPD requirements specified in this paragraph, in order that they may be identified by members of the public using the BEVA lists. Should any Veterinary Surgeon, included in any BEVA lists, at any time have upheld against them a complaint to the RCVS, he/she will normally be removed from the BEVA lists. Note 3: When application for inclusion on a BEVA AI list is first made, a Practice may be inspected by

a representative appointed for that purpose by BEVA. All listed Practices may thereafter be re- inspected at the BEVA’s discretion. It is a condition of inclusion in the AI lists that the Veterinary Surgeon with overall responsibility for AI within the Practice is obliged to notify BEVA immediately of any alteration in the Practice structure or premises which affects the practise of AI. Note 4: Whenever a mare’s reproductive tract is being examined, the examining Veterinary Surgeon should be assisted in handling and restraining the mare by at least one other person. When the mare has a foal at foot it is strongly advised that a second person should also assist.
