• What Does a Podiatrist Do?

  • Image field 2
  • Podiatrists are doctors who assist with issues that can affect your feet or lower legs. They can treat injuries, as well as the complications of ongoing health issues such as diabetes. You might hear them called a podiatric physician, or a doctor or podiatric physician.

    Are Podiatrists Really Doctors?

Podiatrists are doctors, but they do not attend traditional medical schools. They own their own institutions and associations for professional professionals. They also have "DPM" (doctor of podiatric medicine) in their names instead of "MD" (medical doctor).

Podiatrists may perform surgery, repair fractured bones, prescribe medicines and also make appointments for lab tests or X-rays. They frequently collaborate alongside other doctors when there is a problem that affects your lower or feet. For the U.S., podiatrists are licensed and are regulated by the state governments.

In college, students who want to be podiatrists take biology along with chemistry, physics, and chemistry in addition to other classes in science to get ready for the podiatry program. Most get a bachelor's degree in biology or a related subject of science.

Then they go to podiatry school for 4 years. They examine how the bones, nerves, and muscles interact to help you move. They also study illnesses and injuries that could affect your feet. That includes how to diagnose them and treat them and how to repair your feet using surgery when needed.
