Scholarships will be awarded to families who demonstrate a hardship. Hardship requests will be reviewed by the Cycling Development Board of Directors. All submissions are confidential.
Consistent with other sports programs, Cycling Development requires students receiving scholarships to maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better during the current school year.
Scholarships are reserved for student athletes who are committed to fully participating in the program. Participation requirements (as contained in the full team rules on the signup form) are below.
Participation:
High School Mountain biking is a team sport. Our expectations for participation are like other high school, or club sports. The basic expectation is that you will attend practice and participate in the NorCal league races. Specific expectations are:
- You will attend at LEAST 75% of team practices. As we say above, we really expect that athletes will attend every practice. Obvious exceptions are illness, injury, and pre-arranged family or school obligations. Athletes that are not attending 75% of practices will be contacted by the head coach to assess the situation and make sure that attendance expectations are met.
- You will attend and participate in the NorCal league races. There are 4 league races each year and an optional NorCal Championship race. The races are in various locations in Northern California and most of them will involve a full weekend of travel. The league will post the dates and locations of the races in early Spring. Some exceptions will be granted for athletes with conflicts. Athletes can work with their head coach to address this as soon as the conflict is known. Again, the working expectation is that athletes will attend all races.
We begin our training in November with once a week pre-season activity. 4 day/week training begins in January. Our races start in late February and run though May. Athletes participating in High School Fall sports are welcome to join the team when their season wraps up.
In addition to athlete participation, parents of scholarship athletes are required to volunteer 10 hours of their time to the team. This is in addition to the volunteer requirement discussed in the Parent and Athlete Information Packet.
Athletes who are provided with a scholarship bike will be responsible for basic maintenance and cleaning of that bike. They will be provided with necessary tools and supplies to keep the bike in good working order and are expected to do so. This responsibility includes routinely inspecting the bike for any wear or damage and reporting this to their head coach. Scolarship bikes that are routinely coming to practice without being maintained may be recalled by the team.
