"Find your way back. Big big world, but you got it, baby" - Beyonce.
The purpose of this workshop series is to create a safe space for Black Queer folks (age 18+) in Chicago to grow, heal, create, and build community. We will meet once a week to make art, connect with eachother, and tell transformative stories. Participants may choose to recreate, continue, or "critically fabulate" a story. By honoring our past, we heal in the present, to make way for the future.
We will be creating across different mediums over the course of four weeks. All participants are asked to bring what they consider to be "missing from the archives" to serve as inspiration for creating. This item could be a cherished item from a loved one, a personal keepsake, a photo, or a historical piece that inspires. What matters most is the piece has a story and it has meaning to you. Other pieces of inspiration will be provided as examples during each workshop. At the final workshop, participants will have time to work on, recreate, or finish artwork. At thier discretion, participants may choose to share and present on their final piece.
Sept. 9th, Session 1- Creative Writing: Prompts will be provided to guide participants through processing the stories for their archival piece
Sept. 16th, Session 2 - Crafting: Participants will have the option of creating with their hands using clay, paper, and other various materials to express the stories associated with the archival pieces
Sept. 23rd, Session 3 - Painting: Acrylic paint, watercolors, and canvas will be provided to express the essence of the stories associated with the archival pieces
Sept. 30th, Session 4 - Free Form Creation/Sharing: This final workshop is a free form workshop where participants may choose to complete any past artwork or create something new altogether to share with the group (if they choose to)
Time: 6:30pm - 7:30pm (FINAL session runs until 8:30)
