OUR STORY
Our father Sam Davis #57 was an Offensive Guard for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1967-1979. He wasn’t drafted, he was a walk on. He asked Art Rooney, the founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers to give him a chance to show him what he was made of. Sure enough, our father’s actions spoke louder than words and in due time he became the team captain and helped the Steelers win four Super Bowls.
In 1991, our father Sam Davis’ life changed as we knew it and our lives changed along with it. He suffered from a traumatic brain injury, leaving him with permanent brain damage and in a personal care home. As a result, our then 30 year old mother, Tamara Davis, became a single mother of three children all under the age of 5; leaving us to navigate a very different and at times difficult world than most of our peers.
We know all too well the challenges that face families when a loved one is unable to be present in the most ideal way, whether that is due to a mental or physical disability, or other life circumstances. We know the additional financial and emotional burden placed on families, when there is one adult in the household, especially for a graduating high school senior.
Our story, like many of yours, is one of trials and tribulations, but we share our story with you because it is a testament to the strength, perseverance and unconditional love that exist with in each of us.
