  • READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE SUBMITTING A REQUEST

Indianapolis Animal Care Services is currently over capacity. Any animal brought to the shelter is at risk of euthanasia.

While we understand circumstances arise that may make it difficult to continue caring for a pet, our shelter is currently overcrowded with animals and we lack the space to continuously accept new animals in our care without planning.

Therefore, you MUST schedule an intake appointment for your animal.

Appointments are being scheduled due to the number of requests we receive daily.  This allows our staff to properly care for and provide for the animals presently in our building. We cannot immediately intake animals for moves, evictions, new babies, etc.

The shelter does have resources available that may allow you to keep your pet in the home. Indy CARES is a program that may be able to offer medical care assistance, spay and neuter help, behavior support, companion pet supplies, and education.

You must be a Marion County resident and have a government-issued photo ID to schedule an appointment or use Indy CARES services.

  • BEHAVIOR CONCERNS:

If you feel you are in need of immediate intake due to an aggressive dog, instead of completing this form, please contact the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622 or put in a request via the web HERE.

Please review the articles linked on this website if you are in need of assistance with behavior-related issues: IndyHumane - Behavior Resources

Requests for the surrender of owned aggressive animals will more than likely result in euthanasia.  Because of this, for animals without a reported bite history, we ask you to pursue the following options for your owned pet:

    • Reach out to a trainer-one who is a behaviorist, to get an assessment and recommendation.  There are organizations who can assist in finding or paying for them.
    • Consult your veterinarian to get an objective assessment of your pet and discuss options
    • If your veterinarian recommends behavioral euthanasia, schedule with them.

    COMMUNITY RESOURCES:

There are many organizations that may be able to assist with the care or rehoming of your pet.

Pets.Findhelp.com: allows you to search for human and animal support services in your area.

  • REHOMING ASSISTANCE:

Sometimes, rehoming your animal is best. But, for the best interest of your pet, it is important to know that the county shelter is not the best place for an animal and should only be a last resort. Animal shelters are a very scary place for pets and IACS is overcrowded with no open kennels. If the pet can find a new home without coming to the shelter, that’s the best option.

As a first step, please post your pet to Adopt-A-Pet - Rehoming Assistance (low cost) or Home to Home - Rehoming Assistance (free) for a minimum of 14 days. You'll be able to create a profile and share the pet's story with thousands of potential adopters, hopefully skipping the shelter completely.  Visit our LinkTree for additional rehoming resources: https://linktr.ee/indycares.

You can also search for possible openings at local rescues by searching Petfinder’s Database found here: Search for Animal Shelters & Rescue Groups | Petfinder

By submitting this form, you are agreeing that Indianapolis Animal Care Services, or IndyCARES, may submit a post on one or more rehoming websites or social media using the contact info you have provided in this form.

  • Vet Care Assistance

  • Indy CARES may be able to provide a vet care voucher worth up to $150 of care at West Michigan Street Veterinary Clinic. We can sometimes provide limited additional funds depending on diagnosis and your financial circumstances. You are expected to also contribute to expenses.

Assistance is for Marion County residents only. Photo ID as proof of residency is required when you arrive at the clinic.

We are unable to assist with ongoing/regular care such as vaccines, flea and tick preventatives, deworming, anxiety medication, seizure medication, grooming services, diabetes, dental work, and more. We can sometimes provide flea/tick preventatives and dewormer at the intake door of the shelter - if we have any available.

If you agree to receive assistance from Indy CARES, you are also agreeing to have your pet spayed/neutered and microchipped through our assistance program (if they are not already). These services are not optional.

Please provide the following information so we can process your vet care voucher request:

  • Important Note

Due to the shelter being over capacity, you will be required to make an appointment.

Please be sure to check your voicemail and email for information from the shelter. We must speak with you prior to scheduling an appointment. Any animal brought to the shelter is at risk of euthanasia.

  • Local ordinance requires that you have this pet scanned for a microchip. This can be done for free at any veterinary clinic or animal shelter.

Local ordinance requires that all found pets are posted on Indy Lost Pet Alert within 48 hours of being found. Please submit a post on that website if you have not already done so. Click Here: https://www.indylostpetalert.com/

After 14 days of having the pet posted on Indy Lost Pet Aert, you may then decide to keep or rehome the pet.  If you are interested in keeping or rehoming this pet if you are unable to locate their owner, please do not bring the animal to the shelter.

According to a recent study, 70% of lost dogs that were reunified with their owners were found less than one mile from their homes. Our goal is help owners reunite with their lost pet. Please help us by doing everything possible to locate their owner before considering bringing this pet to our shelter.

The best way you can help lost pets is to start by walking the area in which they are found for their owner.
