Lhabab Düchen occurs on the 22nd day of the ninth Lunar month according to Tibetan calendar. It commemorates the anniversary in which Buddha Shakyamuni's return to Earth from the God Realm of the Thirty-Three after teaching Dharma for several months to the gods, including his mother, Mayadevi, who had died a week after Buddha’s birth and been reborn there. The teachings were also to repay the kindness of Buddha's mother by liberating her from Samsara.
Buddha was exhorted by his disciple and representative Maudgalyayana to return, and after a long debate and under a full moon agreed to return.
This day also coincides with the birthday of H.H. Drikung Kyabgon Chungtsang Rinpoche.
It is auspicious to perform any meritorious activities on this special day when the karmic effects of actions are multiplied 100 million times.
