Research & Library Rules
Personal belongings (i.e., books, papers, folders, pens, newspaper, bags, briefcases, computer cases, coats, and umbrellas) cannot be brought into any research spaces. Use of a laptop computer is permitted. Food and beverages are not permitted. Researchers do not have access to office areas or to the archives and collections.
Archival material is highly fragile and vulnerable to improper handling. To minimize any damage, original documents must remain on the desk and separate from researcher’s notes. Documents must not be marked, rearranged, removed from their covers, or taken out of the research room.
Please return files to their proper sequence in each box and make sure not to mix records from different boxes. Access will immediately be revoked should staff learn of any violations. In addition, leaving numerous files spread out on the tables is not permitted.
Use pencils and note pads provided by the Archives staff. Ink, marker pens, and post-it-notes may not be used as they can damage the records.
Making copies: Only digital cameras are allowed to make copies of documents. Do not use flash photography.
Staff allows minimal use of scanning and copying, as some records are fragile and require considerable care. Should you need copies of any documents, please consult with museum staff. Self-scanning of records is not allowed
Notice of Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions
The making of photocopies or other reproduction of copyrighted material may be subject to copyright law, including the U.S. Copyright Act (Title 17, U.S. Code).
Under certain conditions specified by the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that photocopy or other reproduction is not to “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use”, that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
Permission and possible fees may be required from the copyright owner independently of the Capital City Museum materials. It is the user’s obligation to determine and satisfy copyright or other use restrictions. Any use of protected works beyond that allowed by fair use requires the written permission by the copyright owners. Researchers must make their own assessment of rights in light of their intended use.
This institution reserves the right not to provide archival material on request if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the request would involve violation of copyright laws.
Please be advised that the publication or republication of any materials provided by the Capital City Museum is strictly prohibited without the express prior consent.
