  • Working in the Early Years

Early years practitioners play a vital role in the development of young children. They work in nurseries, preschools, and other childcare settings, supporting children from birth to five years old. Their work involves planning activities, observing children’s progress, and providing a safe and nurturing environment.
A key part of the role is safeguarding — making sure that every child is protected from harm. Practitioners must be aware of signs that a child may be at risk and know how to report concerns to the appropriate person. All staff working with children must hold an Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate before they can begin work.
Practitioners also work closely with parents and carers, keeping them informed about their child’s learning and well-being. Good communication skills are essential, as is the ability to write clear and accurate records. The Level 2 qualification provides the knowledge and practical skills needed to work confidently in this rewarding career.
