Eric Nuss grew up in Omaha, spending his first fifteen years there before moving with his family to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he completed high school. His interest in science and athletics led him to Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education with an emphasis on science and athletic coaching. He later advanced his studies at the University of Iowa, completing an MBA that prepared him for leadership roles and organizational development.
His combination of academic and business training enabled him to balance education, leadership, and strategy effectively. These experiences provided the framework for a career dedicated to teaching, coaching, and guiding others toward success.
Entering His Career
He began his professional life in Colorado Springs as a middle school teacher. Teaching taught him the value of communication, structure, and building trust. While he enjoyed education, he transitioned into sales and sales management, where he developed a deeper understanding of business growth and leadership.
At the same time, he coached youth baseball, where his approach emphasized teamwork, accountability, and discipline. His coaching style provided young athletes with tools they could apply both on and off the field. The values he promoted on the field became principles he carried into his consulting career, where he used similar methods to help businesses succeed.
Building a Professional Role in Dentistry
Over the past two decades, Eric has specialized in consulting within the dental industry. He has partnered with doctors and practice owners to guide them through acquisitions, integration, and periods of rapid growth. His work has included strategic planning, leadership development, and operational oversight.
He has built scalable systems in finance, compliance, and human resources that allow practices to function smoothly while providers maintain focus on patient care. By combining operational strength with clinical excellence, he has helped practices grow in value and stability.
He currently serves as Strategic Advisor at XpoDental, where he continues to provide practical guidance for practices seeking to thrive in a competitive environment.
Closing the Leadership Gap
One of the central challenges in dentistry is the lack of formal training in business leadership for doctors. Many are highly skilled clinically but lack the tools to build practices that hold long-term enterprise value. As a result, many practices face difficulties during transitions or sales, and only a small percentage of owners retire on their own terms.
Eric Nuss has addressed this issue by designing tax-efficient exit strategies, building scalable practice models, and developing operational systems that protect revenue and support employee retention. These efforts allow owners to prepare for growth and eventual transition while safeguarding their investments.
He also encourages leaders to move forward quickly, take responsibility, and learn from mistakes. His perspective helps doctors and practice leaders build resilience and adapt to change.
Industry Recognition
Eric's contributions have been widely recognized. He was profiled in Forbes magazine for his role in creating and expanding Henry Schein's Business Solutions Division, as well as for establishing the Dental Business Institute (DBI). His efforts introduced MBA-level business education into dentistry, an innovation that changed how many practice owners approach leadership.
Dental Economics also acknowledged his work on the national rollout of DBI, crediting him with reshaping how dentists prepare for growth and ownership transitions. He has authored four textbooks that serve as the DBI curriculum and published articles in respected outlets, including Dental Economics, Dentistry Today, Inside Dentistry, and Dental Tribune. His writings cover topics such as practice growth, mergers and acquisitions, and scaling doctor-led groups.
Eric has also served as a keynote speaker and panelist at events such as the Dykema DSO Conference and other national summits. His research and publications continue to be shared across the industry through conferences, webinars, and leadership programs.
As Founding Director of both Henry Schein Business Solutions and DBI, he received recognition for creating educational programs that continue to influence practices nationwide.
Coaching Experience
He has also dedicated time to coaching. At STiKS Baseball Academy, where he coached for nearly four years, his focus was on fundamentals, teamwork, and player development. His leadership helped players succeed competitively while building life skills.
He also coached boys' basketball at Southeast Christian School for nearly two years. His emphasis on communication, fundamentals, and values supported athletes as they developed on and off the court. These experiences reflect his consistent commitment to building people through discipline and teamwork.
Influences That Shaped Him
During his college years, Eric studied abroad in Tanzania. This experience reshaped his outlook on materialism, faith, and frugality. Living in a different culture gave him a perspective that continues to influence his personal and professional life.
His blended family has also shaped his approach. Raising six children has taught him empathy, flexibility, and patience. These lessons continue to guide how he approaches leadership and decision-making, enabling him to strike a balance between structure and understanding.
Personal Life
He lives in Parker, Colorado, with his wife and their six children. Family life is active and filled with school, sports, travel, and time together. Whether attending games, sharing meals, or traveling, he values the time spent with family as a reminder of what matters most.
Family remains central to his motivation and perspective. It reinforces his belief in building businesses that allow people to create time, freedom, and balance in their lives. With a career grounded in education, leadership, and service, Eric Nuss continues to guide others in creating opportunities for growth, stability, and long-term success.
