  • Letter from civil society organisations and networks of the Anna Lindh Foundation

    written in November 2023
  • We, the undersigned civil society organisations and networks, call upon all Member States of the United Nations to use their collective influence and resources to establish a permanent ceasefire in Palestine and Israel.

We express our unreserved support for the statement made by the Secretary General of the United Nations, M. António Guterres, to the UN Security Council on 24 October 2023.

We condemn the deliberate targeting of civilians, including many children, attacks on civilian housing and infrastructure such as hospitals and schools, and the forced displacement of civilians, which amount to severe violations of human rights and international law.

We call on all states and other actors involved to do everything in their power to enable humanitarian aid to reach the people in need, and for hostages and political prisoners to be released.

We further call upon the international community and the United Nations to use all means at their disposal to ensure the immediate and lasting respect of human and fundamental rights in all of Palestine and Israel. We stress the responsibility of all Member States of the United Nations to honour their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law.

If we want to prevent the world from spiralling further into conflict, we need to provide for peace in the Middle East.

We therefore appeal to the United Nations to consider deploying an international protective presence in the occupied Palestinian territories, under the supervision of the UN, and working to make the city of Jerusalem a territory under international governance and protection.

A comprehensive, just and lasting peace needs to respect the cardinal principle of the right of a people to self-determination. A two-state solution within the pre-1967 borders is still broadly considered to be the most viable way to achieve this objective.

The current situation in Palestine and Israel has become the litmus test for the international community’s ability to foster and preserve peace on our planet.

    Sincerely,
