Program Speaker:
Marjorie Schaffer, PhD, RN, taught public health nursing and nursing research at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota for 31 years. She has nursing practice experience in psychiatric and public health nursing. Currently she volunteers as a family to family teacher for the National Alliance on Mental Illness and serves as an ambassador at All Saints Lutheran Church for Mental Health Connect. She is in her sixth year on the Hennepin County Adult Mental Health Advisory Council. She parents an adult daughter who lives with bipolar disorder and recently published a book for family members, titled, Journey Through the Mental Illness Maze: How Families Find Hope and Acceptance.
Objectives
As a result of attending this symposium, participants will be able to:
1. Explain mental health promotion needs throughout the lifespan.
2. Identify common mental health conditions and contributing factors.
3. Determine strategies to reduce stigma and discrimination toward persons who live with a mental illness.
4. Analyze family experiences with supporting a loved one living with a mental illness.
5. Select mental health resources for families and faith communities.
6. Identify action steps for promoting mental health in faith communities.
