Traffic Graffic Utility Box Art Contest

Since 2014, utility boxes throughout Federal Way have been transformed into vibrant works of art, thanks to the creativity of numerous artists. Former Federal Way Arts Commission board chair Gary Gillespie initiated the Utility Box Art Pilot Program in 2014, driven by a vision to make the city more lively and visually appealing. Today, more than 35 utility boxes across Federal Way showcase diverse themes, adding a splash of color and creativity to the streetscapes! Your artwork could be seen and enjoyed 24 hours a day for years as people drive by.

Applicants are invited to submit up to three conceptual renderings for consideration. They may be a sketch or a completed illustration done with any media. Interested artists may submit illustrations that fit the theme of the box and the size and shape restrictions for the one identified box (see photo). The selection committee will evaluate then choose from the artwork submitted. Selected artists will be contacted to discuss the next step in getting art on the boxes. Final artwork will be digitized, transferred to vinyl, and installed on the utility box.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 2, 2024.

How to Apply...
Submit high-resolution artwork that will wrap the entire utility box (.png, .jpg, or .pdf formats are acceptable) along with this application, focusing on the current theme of “Nature’s Wonders”  You can send your submission via this form, WeTransfer, or Dropbox link to cassie.swan@cityoffederalway.com

Selection Committee
Federal Way Art Commission selection committee will select winning entries based on the following criteria:

• Overall strength and visual appeal of design concept.
• Relevance to project theme.
• Artistic excellence and innovation.
• Appropriateness for designated location, size, and shape. The illustration must fit the size and proportions of each box.

We encourage artists to submit their artwork even if specific sizing guidelines aren’t provided initially. In the absence of sizing instructions, it’s important to create designs that can be effortlessly resized or enlarged later, ensuring they align perfectly with the designated box.
