Please take the time to become thoroughly familiar with the home visit questions prior to conducting the actual home visit. Print the online form and fill it out during the home visit. Many of the questions require a narrative answer. Please resist the urge to answer them with “yes” or “no” answers. The information you provide will help the Foster Director determine whether to accept or deny an applicant.
For a home visit with a new foster you must take a dog with you on the home visit, even if there is no resident dog. Your close observation of how the applicant(s) react around your dog and their own dog(s) is of major importance to the home visit. If for some reason you are unable to take your dog, please get in touch with the Foster Director BEFORE scheduling or performing the visit.
Please, if there is a resident dog, do not take your own dog into the yard or house prior to introducing them in a neutral location, i.e., sidewalk. Before introducing the dogs, you meet the dog first. If you have any concerns about your dog’s safety, do not introduce them. Some dogs can be territorial and/or aggressive in their own homes. Ask the applicant to put away all toys and food before your dog enters the home or yard.
Because it is a commitment and there are specific rules that foster homes must follow, it’s important to discuss various aspects of fostering, such as: leashing restrictions; not going to dog parks with a foster dog; vet visits to approved GBR vets only; bringing foster dogs to GBR events (e.g. Meet & Greets, fundraising events). After completing the home visit, enter the information in the online form and submit within 24 hours.
