  • Welcome to the Dallas Police Station online open house!

  • The Dallas Police Department has outgrown its current home in City Hall and nearby buildings. The officers and staff need a new, larger station with enough space for essential tasks. This new station will bring all the department members under one roof, allowing them to work more efficiently and stay safe while they serve our community.

In this online open house, you can learn more about the project and share your thoughts and ideas for the future exterior design of the facility.

This online open house includes the following sections:

    • Project Overview
    • Proposed Site and Floor Plans
    • Mock-up of Building Exterior
    • Cost Estimate
    • Next Steps

  • Project Overview

  • The Dallas Police Department needs a new station to ensure it can continue to serve the community and to retain and recruit high-quality officers and staff. The department needs a larger facility to house its 27-person staff, with dedicated spaces to process evidence, train officers and provide privacy for victims and family members.

  • About the Existing Facilities

The current facilities are spread across multiple locations and don’t have the dedicated spaces officers require. More specifically, they:

    • Do not have adequate security or privacy. The police process evidence in the same room (sometimes on the same surface) they use to eat.
    • Lack a dedicated interview room for victims, so private discussions are had in public view and can be overheard by others.
    • Do not have secured parking, and officers must park on the street. At least one person has tried to commit suicide by cop in this area.
    • Lack proper changing areas. In order for the female evidence specialists to access evidence storage, those female staff members must pass through a male staff locker room, where officers might be changing.
    • Lack a safe place to go following challenging or traumatic experiences (for a mental health reprieve).
    • Are not up to code, including ADA requirements. They would also be vulnerable in a major earthquake.

Additionally, officers are currently exposed to contaminants (such as bodily fluid) when in the field and don’t have a safe or proper place to remove the contaminants before entering the station, putting themselves and other officers at risk.

  • Proposed Site & Floor Plans

  • To address the needs of the Police Department, we are looking at the following options:

    New station details:

The proposed two-story station will have about 12,500 square feet of usable space, with all the necessary spaces for the officers’ essential needs, plus room for the department to grow. The new station will be located at 147 SE Court St., the current site of the Polk County Itemizer-Observer and next to its current facilities.

    New station benefits:

    • Efficiency: With all officers and staff located in the same building, they will be able to work more efficiently and collaboratively.
    • Safety:
      • The ground floor will include 13 new secure parking stalls for police vehicles and a secure entry for staff.
    • Dedicated rooms for different functions:
      • Training (dividable room will be able to hold two meetings at the same time if needed)
      • Separate interview rooms for suspects and victims ensure privacy
      • Evidence processing area (ensures chain of custody is maintained and ensures police staff are protected from any fumes and contaminants)
      • Administration offices
      • Break room with private patio area (important for mental health)
      • Personal storage area with private toilet shower changing rooms
    • Code compliance: The new building will meet ADA, safety code and energy code requirements.
    • Earthquake-ready: The new station will meet seismic criteria to remain operational in the event of a large earthquake such as the Cascadia event.
    • Recruitment and retention: Police recruitment is competitive. A new station with sufficient space and up-to-date amenities will help the department recruit and retain high-quality officers.
    • Improved streetscape: The new building will fill in a gap on Court Street, eliminating the empty space between two buildings and improving the feel of downtown Dallas.

  • Mock-up of Building Exterior

  • In October, the Dallas Police Department held open house events to share information about the new station project, including pictures showing different potential exterior designs for the station.

During the public feedback process, many Dallas community members said they wanted the exterior of the new station to have some historic elements to ensure it fits in with the existing downtown buildings.

  • Here is an architectural rendering of the new station’s exterior:

  • Before you leave, remember to submit your responses on the "Next steps" page.

  • Cost Estimate

  • The estimated cost for the new station is between $15.4 million and $17.2 million.

Most of this is the cost to build the new station and prepare the site for construction. Other expenses included in this estimate include architectural and engineering services, site investigation, furnishings for the new station and various government fees.

The estimate does not need to include budget to purchase the site, as the police department already owns the land.

If the May 2025 bond measure for the new station passes, the project team will finalize the design and then provide an updated cost estimate.

  • Before you leave, remember to submit your responses on the "Next steps" page.

  • Next Steps and How to Stay Involved

  • Thank you for participating in the online open house for the new Dallas Police station!

It’s important to know that the design for the new station is not yet finalized and will continue to evolve as the design process continues.

Funding for a new station will come from the sale of voter-approved bonds expected to be on the May 2025 ballot. If the bond passes, the design will be finalized soon after, with construction to follow.
