    Dallas Police Station

    Online Open House #1
  • Welcome to the Dallas Police Station online open house!

  • This online survey is now closed. This content is still available for viewing, but we are no longer accepting submissions. Thank you for participating!

  • The Dallas Police Department has outgrown its current home in City Hall and nearby buildings. The officers and staff need a new, larger station with enough space for essential tasks. This new station will bring all the department members under one roof, allowing them to work more efficiently and stay safe while they serve our community.

In this online open house, you can learn more about the project and share your thoughts and ideas for the future exterior design of the facility.

This online open house includes the following sections:

    • Project Overview
    • Initial Future Site and Floor Plans
    • Share your ideas for the future exterior

  • Project Overview

  • The Dallas Police Department needs a new station to ensure it can continue to serve the community and to retain and recruit high-quality officers and staff. The department needs a larger facility to house its 27-person staff, with dedicated spaces to process evidence, train officers and provide privacy for victims and family members.

  • About the Existing Facilities

The current facilities are spread across multiple locations and don’t have the dedicated spaces officers require. More specifically, they:

    • Do not have adequate security or privacy. The police process evidence in the same room (sometimes on the same surface) they use to eat.
    • Lack a dedicated interview room for victims, so private discussions are had in public view and can be overheard by others.
    • Do not have secured parking, and officers must park on the street. At least one person has tried to commit suicide by cop in this area.
    • Lack proper changing areas. In order for the female evidence specialists to access evidence storage, those female staff members must pass through a male staff locker room, where officers might be changing.
    • Lack a safe place to go following challenging or traumatic experiences (for a mental health reprieve).
    • Are not up to code, including ADA requirements. They would also be vulnerable in a major earthquake.

Additionally, officers are currently exposed to contaminants (such as bodily fluid) when in the field and don’t have a safe or proper place to remove the contaminants before entering the station, putting themselves and other officers at risk.

  • Initial Future Site and Floor Plans

  • To address the needs of the Police Department, we are looking at the following options:

    New station details:

The proposed two-story station will be about 13,500 square feet in size, with all the necessary spaces for the officers’ essential needs, plus room for the department to grow. The new station will be located at 147 SE Court St., the current site of the Polk County Itemizer-Observer and next to its current facilities.

    New station benefits:

    • Efficiency: With all officers and staff located in the same building, they will be able to work more efficiently and collaboratively.
    • Safety:
      • The ground floor will include 12 new secure parking stalls for police vehicles and a secure entry for staff.
    • Dedicated rooms for different functions:
      • Training (dividable room will be able to hold two meetings at the same time if needed)
      • Separate interview rooms for suspects and victims ensure privacy
      • Evidence processing area (ensures chain of custody is maintained and ensures police staff are protected from any fumes and contaminants)
      • Administration offices
      • Break room with private patio area (important for mental health)
      • Personal storage area with private toilet shower changing rooms
    • Code compliance: The new building will meet ADA, safety code and energy code requirements.
    • Earthquake-ready: The new station will meet seismic criteria to remain operational in the event of a large earthquake such as the Cascadia event.
    • Recruitment and retention: Police recruitment is competitive. A new station with sufficient space and up-to-date amenities will help the department recruit and retain high-quality officers.
    • Improved streetscape: The new building will fill in a gap on Court Street, eliminating the empty space between two buildings and improving the feel of downtown Dallas.

  • Share Your Ideas for the Exterior Design

  • We’d like to hear your thoughts on how to make the future police station fit in with downtown Dallas and feel welcoming to visitors. Use the survey below to let us know what you would like to see reflected in the exterior building character. Your feedback will help us consider how to incorporate different features in the initial design concepts for the new police station.

    Future Design Ideas

The design of the new police station are driven by constraints of the site and the needs of the police department, but the city and the department understand that this project is only possible with the support of the community. This new station will be a facility for the community, enabling the officers and staff to continue to provide the excellent service.

With that said, we would love to get your feedback on what the exterior of the new station should look like. We have a unique opportunity to shape the face of the Court Street block and want to know what you think would be a successful design that fits within downtown Dallas.

The following images show other police stations of similar scale to what the Dallas Police need and represent a variety of building styles, textures and features.

Please tell us which image best matches your style preferences and would best complement the local area and historic feel of downtown Dallas. Please note that the new station will be next to two historic buildings on Court Street, as well as a historical courthouse building across the street with a modern addition.

  • Before you leave, remember to submit your responses on the "Next steps" page.

  • Next Steps and How to Stay Involved

  • Thank you for participating in the online open house for the new Dallas Police station!

Your feedback will help develop possible design concepts and cost estimates that will be shared in the second open house this spring. At the next event, we’ll share a preferred design concept with you to make sure we’re designing a facility that meets the needs of our community.

Funding for a new station will come from the sale of voter-approved bonds expected to be on the May 2025 ballot. If the bond passes, design work would begin immediately with construction to follow.
