  • The City of Washougal is planning to replace Fire Station 43, remodel the nearby police station and co-locate the facilities.

  • This online open house includes the following pages:

    • Project Overview
    • Site Plan and Floor Plan

  • Project Overview

  • Fire Station 43 has outlived its useful life. We can't modify it to meet the needs required of a modern fire station. Its long-term maintenance would cost more than replacing the building. Washougal needs a new station to ensure adequate fire and emergency medical services as the city grows.

  • Current Camas-Washougal Fire and Police Station

  • More specifically, the current building:

    • Frequently floods with stormwater, so firefighters use sandbags year-round to block some of it. Structural damage has occurred from flooding over the years.
    • Intermittently has sewage backups.
    • Doesn’t have a dedicated space for decontaminating clothing and gear after responding to a fire — which risks firefighters’ health and safety due to carcinogen exposure.
    • Lacks an exhaust system for fire engines to maintain healthy air quality.
    • Would not withstand a significant earthquake.
    • Lacks space for additional firefighters/EMS personnel to meet growing demands.
    • Lacks mandated safety clearances around equipment.
    • Lacks facilities for a diverse workforce (male/female changing rooms) to be consistent with diversity, equity and inclusion guidelines.
    • Lacks private medical screening and treatment area for walk-ins and drive-ins.

The building also doesn’t meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards for public access and lacks a public restroom.

  • Site Plan and Floor Plan

  • Site Plan

  • The draft site plan suggests:

    • Replacing the existing Fire Station 43 with a larger Fire facility to meet the growing needs of Washougal and provide the City with a facility that is low maintenance, durable, efficient, and attractive.
    • Combining program elements of the Fire and Police facilities for increased efficiency and cost savings.
    • Redesigning the existing site for improved security and response.
    • Regrading the existing site and raising the finish floor level to solve water drainage and filtration problems.

The site also includes the existing Silver Star Search and Rescue Facility to the west. Firefighters would use it for temporary operational support during construction.

  • Floor Plan

  • The draft floor plan shows minor changes to the police building so it can connect to the new Fire Station. The connected buildings would share a fitness room, shower rooms, classrooms, meeting rooms and kitchen. These would have enough capacity for the number of police officers and firefighters the city needs now, and the higher number it will need years from now.

The connected buildings would also have the space and technical features for police and firefighters to safely use and maintain modern equipment and to keep up their training with it.

  • Next Steps and How to Stay Involved

  • Thank you for participating.

Your feedback will help us draft several designs and cost estimates. We'll share them in the second open house in April, and ask you to help us choose. In May, we’ll share the preferred design with you to ensure it meets community needs.

Funding for a new station depends on the sale of voter-approved bonds expected to be on the August 2024 ballot. We anticipate finishing the preferred design and cost estimate later this summer. If the bond passes, we'll plan construction and start it soon after.
