2024 ALA Napkin Sketch Contest

Let's embark on a creative journey and celebrate the beauty and inspiration of travel. Whether you venture close to home or far away, show us your favorite building or place. Are you visiting a well-known city or landmark or just your little corner of the world?

Take us on your travels with your napkin sketch. The possibilities are virtually endless! A panel of experts will judge your 5-inch by 5-inch sketches and award prizes based on creativity, originality and technical skill.

Who is Eligible to Enter:

ALA Members and non-members who are in the United States are welcome to participate. You must be an architect, associate, student, new graduate, or supplier/service provider to the built environment. Entry Categories: Licensed Architect, Non-Professional, and Student. There is no entry fee.

Winners and Prizes:

One overall FIRST PLACE AWARD chosen from all the entries. Up to three (3) RUNNER-UP AWARDS will be awarded in each category of licensed architect, non-professional and student as chosen by the panel of judges. The judges may also elect to award HONORABLE MENTION AWARDS that recognize an outstanding aspect of a sketch such as the use of a unique medium, humor, timeliness, etc.
One overall FIRST PLACE award will receive a $200 gift card and personalized cocktail napkins. Runners-Up will receive a $25 gift card.

Awards Recognition:

Winners will be notified by email Monday, October 21 and announced during the November 7 ALA Design Awards celebration to take place at the University Club, Chicago. Award winner names and sketches, along with firm/school also will be published on the ALA website, in social media, in marketing materials and in Licensed Architect Magazine, a publication of the Association of Licensed Architects.

Judging:

Sketches will be judged based on creativity, originality and technical skill.

What You’ll Need:

A 5-inch by 5-inch cocktail napkin and a pen, brush, marker or pencil. Entries larger than 5 inches by 5 inches will be disqualified.

The Contest:

Our theme, "Travel Sketches," is broad and open-ended, designed to ignite your imagination and showcase your unique perspective through your sketch.

Create the sketch on an actual 5-inch by 5-inch white napkin. You may cut a larger napkin down to these dimensions.
Use ink, ballpoint pen, markers or paint.
You may enter up to 5 sketches.
Scan in your sketch and save the file (in png, jpg or pdf formats) as your name and include the number of the sketch. All individual files should be under 3MB.
Attach your entries to this form. Label them: ENTRY 1– YOUR NAME, with each thereafter labeled 2– YOUR NAME, etc. up to 5.

Deadline to Enter:

All sketches must be received by 5 pm CDT, Sunday, September 29, 2024.
