First, the non-hiking option offers a relaxing experience to enjoy Merapi’s lava from a safe location surrounded by a calm natural setting. Your guide will start by taking you to the bunker and the observation tower, which were once used during eruptions and for monitoring volcanic activity. The journey then continues to the main viewpoint, where you can enjoy the panorama of Mount Merapi and its glowing lava flowing as part of an extraordinary natural process, accompanied by local snacks and warm drinks.
Second, the hiking option to Turgo hill offers a closer and more adventurous experience, taking you to a viewpoint at the top of the hill where the glowing lava is more visible and the city lights of Yogyakarta shimmer from above. The hike from the parking area takes about 40–50 minutes through around 1,740 steps, surrounded by cool, refreshing nature, and you may occasionally hear the soft rumble of Merapi adding to the atmosphere. Along the way, your guide will accompany you, share stories, and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Additional option, the Sunrise Hike to Bukit Turgo starts at 3:00 AM, following the same route as the night hike but giving you the chance to see the lava before sunrise. From the top of the hill, you can watch the sunrise and enjoy the panoramic view of Yogyakarta while breathing in the fresh morning air and admiring the majestic Merapi Volcano. A soft volcanic rumble can occasionally be heard and wild birds are often seen in the area, adding to the natural beauty of the experience.
