  • About John Dockendorf

  • In December 1959, John Dockendorf was born. He spent his formative years near Baltimore, Maryland, although Dockendorf would soon find himself having a greater impact elsewhere. As was the case with many children growing up in the Middle Atlantic states, education was paramount, and following a hard education at a friend's school, he packed his skis and proceeded to the University of Vermont.

Dockendorf first made an impression during his freshman year of college. After scorching through several university programs in the late 1970s, he graduated with honors from the University of Vermont in 1981. Dockendorf, like many others, pursued careers and pathways in leisure and park management and ended up as an assistant to several professors. This prompted him to pursue graduate studies in the same profession, and within a decade, Dockendorf had earned a Master of Management, Hospitality from Cornell University and a Master of Hotel Administration from the School of Hotel Administration. Dockendorf again graduated at the top of his class, and he was also the recipient of the John E.H. Sherry Scholarship and served as student body president at Cornell's school for his discipline.

When you head an institution for over 30 years, things tend to get a little personal. This is true of John Dockendorf. For 28 years, Adventure Treks Inc. was one of the most well-known teen outdoor programs available to kids under his direction. Dockendorf's program and initiative have drawn participants from the whole continental United States as well as over 25 countries abroad. All to join in growth-oriented activities and outdoor adventures in some of the best untamed natural locations in the United States of America's west, as well as Alaska and Canada.

Adventure Treks was a sizable operation. It readily employed 70 educators, in addition to a full-time staff and part-time support. The program was adaptable and adaptable, even operating with limitations during the 2020 and COVID shutdowns. This was predicated on the program's pre-existing safety record, which had lasted over three decades. Dockendorf stepped down from Adventure Treks in 2021, giving the torch of great outdoor education to Dave McGlashan, his ten-year director.

John and his wife Jane reopened Camp Pinnacle in 2011 in addition to Adventure Treks. Pinnacle was a historic summer camp built in 1928 but fell on hard times and was forced to close in 2010. Over a ten-year period, the Dockendorf family and partner Steve Baskin, owner of Camp Champions in Texas, thoroughly renovated the facility and resurrected Camp Pinnacle's tradition, reestablishing it as one of North Carolina's best summer camps. Pinnacle now enrolls summer campers a year in advance. After the summer of 2021, the Dockendorf's handed over leadership of Camp Pinnacle to the Baskin's and directors Fayssoux and J G Moss.

Dockendorf initially established a community presence in Western North Carolina as a member of the Flat Rock Park Development Committee, which transformed a 62-acre golf course into an excellent community park. Dockendorf also chaired the playground development committee, which resulted in Flat Rock having one of the greatest playgrounds in the state. Dockendorf has also served as chair of the Mountain Community School's board of trustees. This was in addition to Dockendorf's involvement in the establishment of the French Broad River Academy in Asheville.

John Dockendorf's community work extended and remained as committed as his involvement with Adventure Treks. Dockendorf increased his civic activity in 2015 when he was elected to the Flat Rock Village Council. Dockendorf served as a delegate for Flat Rock on the French Broad Metropolitan Planning organization and its Prioritization Committee. He also served on the Henderson County Transportation Advisory Committee. All of these jobs, each of which was interesting in its own way, added up to the broader contribution Dockendorf made to his constituents. By 2019, the responsibilities had grown substantial, and Dockendorf began gradually paring down his activities as he approached early retirement.

Formal or informal, classroom-based or off-campus, place-based education can take place in museums, community gardens, or state parks. Place-based education can also be introduced into early childhood education, giving pupils the opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills.

Internships are one type of place-based education. Internships are available in almost every discipline and can include work at a small business, a major corporation, or a non-profit organization. Internships can also be incorporated into a degree program.

There are numerous options for the agency in outdoor education, whether you are seeking a full-time or part-time position. Leading instructional canoe trips in swamp forests, working with native species, or assisting with environmental research projects are all possibilities.

Applying for a job in outdoor education through your local community college, school, or state department of natural resources is the easiest way to locate one. These options frequently include internships, full-time and part-time work, and a housing allowance.

The best part is that you'll be allowed to participate in a variety of outdoor activities in exchange. Working with various wildlife, organizing team-building activities, leading instructional canoe trips, and collaborating with environmental research initiatives are some of the employment available.

For example, the Alabama 4-H Science School in Alabama provides an excellent education in environmental education. The university has multiple campuses throughout the state. They provide classes in horticulture, animal care, and, of course, environmental education.

Outdoor education, despite its lack of popularity in many nations, is a crucial component of a successful school. It can improve a child's academic performance, health, and social development, as well as assist them in establishing a good attitude toward learning. Outdoor learning is directly linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #4, "Better Health and Nutrition."

According to National Wildlife Federation research, children who spend time outside do better on standardized tests than children who play indoors. It was also discovered that students that walk outside have higher attendance and behavior.

These advantages are not unique to the National Wildlife Federation report. Outdoor learning has also been shown to boost student achievement in science and math. Furthermore, learning outside can have an impact on pediatric health.

While many recommendations for outdoor learning emphasize the benefits of being outside, the scientific quality of these studies is low. More research is needed to fully understand the benefits of physical activity in general and outdoor learning in particular.

There are numerous ways to NSLOtC research in outdoor learning situations. Field trips, adventure education, and outdoor curricular lessons are examples of these. They are frequently provided with disparate skill sets and captive audiences.

Outdoor learning in nature provides measurable benefits for students. Improved social skills, environmental awareness, self-concept, and motivation are among them. These advantages have been noted by people of all ages. However, the mental health benefits of NSLOtC have not been thoroughly researched across age groups.

There is a need to investigate how natural experiences are given. Future research could look into how diverse surroundings affect learning and how classroom design affects the learning experience.

While outdoor learning in nature has been studied in North America, the majority of study has been undertaken in the United Kingdom. Adventure education, which is largely intended for secondary school pupils, is the most common learning scenario. According to a recent assessment of adventure education, some well-being benefits have been documented. These trials, however, have no long-term follow-up.

  • Instructions for Paddling in Rough Water

    Published on : 11-16-2022
  • The go-down command is crucial for maintaining rudder control when paddling in white water. It might be tempting to keep paddling in rapids with strong currents until told to stop. It would help if you did anything to keep yourself in the raft as you paddle until you get the order.

An experienced guide will instruct you to "get down," which means to lean over the raft's high side. Just follow this order and distribute your weight equally to keep from flipping. If you want to be safe when paddling white water, you must always listen to your guide.

Learning the Duffek stroke is essential for paddleboarding on white water. You will need to use a compound stroke to enter and leave an eddy, a region of turbulent water often found behind a huge boulder or another impediment. You may use it to maintain your balance and posture while navigating rapids.

Performing the Duffek stroke takes exceptional hand-eye coordination. The paddle should be held with the knee straight and the power face perpendicular to the direction of the river. In addition, you'll need to coordinate your motions with the paddle blade's rotation. In addition to being a devastating attack, the Duffek may be performed with a single stroke.

One of the most useful skills to have while paddling in white water is the ability to do eddy turns. When executed properly, eddy turns to require just a minimal effort because of the interplay of position, angle, and edge. Take a whitewater course or buy Anna's DVD if you want further advice on improving your eddy turns.

When doing eddy turns, paddle in the direction of the eddy's flow. This will help you stay out of the main current, so you don't get swept downstream. If you and a friend are paddling together, you may aim lower into the eddy.

You should constantly keep your body in motion when kayaking since torso rotation is crucial to a stroke. More force is transferred to the paddle, and the strain on the upper body is reduced.

It would help if you had a solid core and powerful arms to rotate your torso effectively. You may increase the force of your strokes by twisting your body with each stroke, which will, in turn, strengthen your arms, shoulders, and core.

If you paddle at an improper angle, you could cause the kayak to flip over or swing. When the paddle blade is at the right angle, it may push evenly into the water. You can paddle more quickly and more accurately if you don't do it.

Bracing the upper body when learning to paddle is a typical error by novices. However, although this gives people a sense of security, it also constrains their abilities. Alternatively, they might spin their torsos to increase their strength and prevent harm to their arms and shoulders. You'll have a much better time kayaking if you take the time to master this fundamental skill of paddling.

  • Skiing Moguls: Why Do Skiers Make Moguls?

    10-27-2022
  • There are several factors that go into making a mogul: athleticism, versatility, and balance. While skiing, a skier must also be aware of the snow conditions. Fortunately, there are a few things that a skier can do to avoid tipping the skis.

One of the most important parts of skiing is balance. To ski well, you must maintain a stable core while keeping your elbows in front of your rib cage. This way, you will be less likely to be thrown off balance. A wide stance can also put you out of balance and slow you down. If one foot is in heavy snow, you will spin or lose balance, and you will be out of balance.

The key to making moguls is to stay balanced. Unlike bumps, where it is easy to lock into the line you want, moguls require a different approach. You must be patient and start out small and work your way up. The first moguls to be attempted are usually small moguls on a blue run.

Skiers who are able to stand upright on moguls can improve their balance through exercises that help them unweight their skis. These exercises will improve their balance when they are in the air and on landing. Once they have equal support on both legs, they will be able to land with ease.

While moguls can be a lot of fun, they also require a certain amount of athleticism and timing. If you turn your skis too quickly or too slowly, you will become thrown off balance. You should practice bump skiing on flat, gentle slopes first to get the hang of the technique. Then, move on to steeper terrain.

One of the most difficult aspects of skiing is skiing bumps, also known as moguls. This terrain is unforgiving, and most skiers avoid it. But if you can master mogul skiing, you'll be a much better skier in other conditions, too.

In the men's moguls competition, Canada has dominated the competition for the last three Games. Mikael Kingsbury is the current Canadian champion. In the women's moguls, the reigning Olympic champion is Perrine Laffont. The last time an American made the podium in moguls was Hannah Kearney, and Bryce Wilson did it in 2010.

Mogul skiing is a sport where skiers can take advantage of the bumps to improve their technique. You can practice this type of skiing anywhere that has bumps. However, it's important to keep your speed under control while skiing moguls. Listed below are some tips for getting the most out of your mogul skiing.

First, moguls form because a lot of skiers are skiing the same slope. As each skier makes a turn, he pushes the snow out of the line and other skiers slide into the trough, which builds up a bump. This effect is compounded when a skier makes multiple turns, and the bumps get bigger the steeper the slope.

The next tip for making mogul turns is to learn how to pivot your skis. This will help you make smoother turns. To do this, you need to learn to lean your legs forward while simultaneously pivoting your body. You should also learn to make crossover turns, which use the uphill side of the neighboring mogul for your turn.

The moguls are made for speed and challenge. Skiers often start off by skiing down a blue run with some moguls. The idea is to practice making turns on soft snow and gain confidence in your technique. The trick is to practice on a slope that is already popular with other skiers. You should focus on timing first. This will help you get to the peak of the bump faster, and you'll have a better chance of landing in a flat spot.

The reason moguls are created is because of snow conditions. The snow is layered and has different types of crystals. The first type is corduroy, which is prepared by a snowplow. Another type of snow is fresh snow cannon powder. Unlike cord snow, this snow is packed with crystals. To make a mogul, you'll need sharp edges and a solid skier's stance. Lastly, there are light snow crystals, which are fine snow crystals that are common after a recent snow dusting. Ice and a solid surface made by a snowplow are a few other types of snow. These conditions are uncommon on slopes, but they are found in patches.

Mogul skiing is a unique form of freestyle skiing, requiring a high level of muscle strength and stamina. The skill is not for the faint of heart. It requires a high degree of coordination and stamina to handle the stress of turning and changing positions between moguls.

  • Examples of service to the community

    Published on : 09-29-2022
  • There are many ways to give back to the community. Some of these are crowdfunding, volunteering, and working as an intern. If you want to do volunteer work, you might want to think about working with a religious group. These things are fun and can help you have a reasonable opinion of yourself. In addition, volunteering can help you meet new people and learn more about how other people live.

Crowdfunding is a great way to help people in your neighbourhood. This way of raising money for a good cause is based on getting small donations from many people. This idea is not new, but it has been used more often in recent years. It's a great way to make a difference and learn more about the world around you.

A crowdfunding campaign has a clear goal, which can be a short-term project or a goal that will take longer to reach. For example, a crowdfunding campaign can help a nonprofit project buy new playground equipment or finish fixing up an old building. A campaign can be different lengths of time, but most last a few weeks.

People back a project if they believe in it; therefore, the process is democratic. It also proves that a project is making a difference in the community. The crowdfunding site will show the number of people who have pledged money to a project. This shows that people in the area are very interested in the project.

Volunteering is a great way to get to know people in your community and make new friends. You will meet people with the same interests, resources, and fun things to do. Also, you'll improve your social skills if you talk to new people all the time. You might even meet more people than you would have otherwise.

Students can use what they've learned in the classroom in the real world when they volunteer. For example, students can learn about environmental issues by taking part in clean-up drives. Students can also learn empathy and patience by helping out in their communities. In addition, many studies have shown that community service students are better prepared for college and life.

Some people might want to help a group that teaches kids how to be safe. These programs can be held at school, in the community, or before or after school. Children can learn skills that can save their lives through these programs.

The Office of Student Volunteerism and Community Engagement has internships that help spread the word about the group's work on campus and in the community. The tasks for these internships can range from gathering information to making new business connections. Interns will also work closely with the Office's Social Media and Publicity Coordinator to spread information about events to the campus community.

Internships are a way for many students to get real-world work experience. They learn about different kinds of jobs and help out with different charities. This real-world experience can help when writing a resume and applying to college. But internships should be recorded in the right way. You must send a letter from the organization where you worked that says how many hours you spent there.

Often, volunteering and internships are the same things. Some students get school credit for volunteer work they do in their communities. In exchange, the students must keep track of how many hours they spend in the community and explain how their work helps. They must also write a paper about their volunteer work and turn it in.

Volunteering with a religious group is a great way to help the community and do something useful. There are many ways to volunteer, whether you want to do it once or every week. Short-term jobs are great for people who are always on the go. However, if you don't have time for a long-term commitment, you can start with one-time tasks like serving communion or reading scripture. You can also start with a group for kids' classes with a list of "extras."

If you can bring a group of people together, it can be advantageous to volunteer with a religious group. For example, you and your friends could form a group that goes to nursing homes to help the people who live there. The group would bring bread and juice and say a short prayer. Collecting cards for the elderly and sending them to people in nursing homes is another excellent idea. Most of the time, people keep these cards for a long time.

Community service is rewarding and can also be good for your physical and mental health. For example, a recent study showed that people who did 200 hours of volunteer work felt better about their physical and mental health.

  • Is There Such a Thing as Summer Camp Down Under?

    Published On:- 08-24-2022
  • Summer camps in Australia are generally less strenuous than their equivalents in the United States. Commands like these typically last for a week and give children the opportunity to spend their time outdoors experiencing nature. The camps are tailored to accommodate participants of varying ages and interests. They emphasize spending time outside and making new friends in settings that are different from their typical routines. They prohibit the use of technological devices such as mobile phones, making them an appropriate choice for children of a younger age. On the other hand, iPhones should not be brought because they are not conducive to being used outside.

There are various options available in Australia for parents who desire to temporarily remove their child from their home for one or two weeks. Children can participate in summer camps, an excellent method to develop their skills and interests. For instance, there are camps for the sports of golf and tennis, in addition to music camps that the Australian Youth Orchestra runs. Even while summer camps can be expensive, they are often a better option than hiring a babysitter during the summer months.

The average time spent at an Australian summer camp is one to two weeks, and participants spend their time outside. The vast majority of summer camps in Australia are designed to accommodate children of varying ages and various interests. The majority of their time is spent going outside and cultivating friendships, both of which are activities that are challenging to undertake in a typical setting. The environment of the camp will be conducive to developing those unique ties. Electronics such as iPhones and iPods are not permitted, and their use of them is strongly discouraged at the vast majority of camps.

The YMCA of New South Wales (NSW) runs numerous summer camps in New South Wales, Australia, designed to cater to children of various ages. The YMCA is dedicated to providing children with opportunities to participate in constructive activities, whether they attend a day camp, a residential summer camp, or a community group camp. As a result, children are given a fun and secure atmosphere to acquire skills that will serve them throughout their lives while also having a good time participating in these activities and events. YMCA camps are located all around New South Wales (NSW), including in the city of Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

The YMCA of New South Wales has created a summer camp program for people of all ages, from small children to teenagers and adults. The Summer 22 program fosters a social setting that is welcoming to all participants and offers a variety of enjoyable tasks and activities. The summer camp plan is adaptable and based on the child's areas of interest. This allows parents to select an appropriate program for their child. You will also profit from the staff's significant experience working with youngsters with various requirements, which will be to your advantage.

The Crusader Union of Australia (CRU) is a youth organization in Australia that is founded on the Bible and operates without making a profit. It focuses primarily on ministering to young people through its CRU Camps, Summit Educational Camps, and CRU School Groups programs. In addition, the Crusader Union of Australia subsidizes the operation of two Christian youth camps and maintains a training division for young Christian leaders. All pupils, regardless of age, are welcome to participate in these camps. Some of the advantages of attending Cru Camps are detailed in the following paragraphs.

The Crusaders Summer Programs were first established in 1930, and more than 75 distinct camps have been held annually since then. These camps have been developed to foster communication skills, encourage teamwork, and promote personal growth. Even though there are a lot of benefits to going to a Cru camp, some parents may find that it's too pricey for their budget. However, cru camps are an excellent opportunity for your children to have fun in a secure environment while allowing you to avoid the strain and anxiety that come along with providing daycare in your own home.

Sports Camp Australia is where you want your child to have a memorable time at summer camp activities and energy. These camps provide a suitable environment that is beneficial to developing an athlete's skills and activities in 15 different sports. They collaborate with US Sports Camps, the organization that runs Nike Sports Camps, and provide several locations across the country for participants to choose from. • What exactly is a Summer Camp?

    Published On:- 08-01-2022
  • Clear timetables are essential for keeping youngsters on track and the camp running smoothly. A music-focused summer camp may plan music theory instruction early in the day, instrument practice in the middle, and a special concert at the conclusion of the summer. Children gain greater skills as the summer develops. Make sure there is adequate time in the timetable for these abilities to develop. Then, select a camp that focuses on your child's preferred topic.

When it comes to managing people at a summer camp, the camp leader must be able to keep the children and staff in the best possible setting. This includes managing disagreement, addressing staff conflicts, and delivering the greatest possible experience for campers. While the work may need some early investment, it will pay off over the course of the summer. If you want your staff to be the best they can be, give them the skills and knowledge they need to deal with all areas of camp life.

Consider starting a summer camp if you have a skill that you can teach youngsters. You might be able to create job descriptions that contain a brief overview of your ability or area of expertise. You might also choose an intriguing topic and a one-of-a-kind talent for the camp. Summer camp organizing is simpler than you think, although it does include some paperwork.

The nicest aspect of operating a summer camp for kids is that it allows them to develop a variety of social skills. Children can use their newly acquired social skills at employment and school. You may urge them to learn a new skill or cultivate a new one this way. Talk to your child about the possibility of beginning a summer camp based on a skill you have throughout the school year. It can help students maintain their confidence and keep their heads held high throughout the school year.

People management at a summer camp is simpler than you would imagine. The personnel at your summer camp is quite busy over the summer, and summer camp may be the last thing on their mind! You may maintain in touch with them through a newsletter, phone calls, or reunion events to ensure that they remain involved with your program. While forming relationships with summer camp staff members is simple when camp is in session, rekindling them is a different matter. Rekindling old friendships might result in stronger relationships.

It is critical to manage medical forms at a summer camp. Parents will complete out registration papers for their children, which will then be sent to the camp health director for evaluation. The forms should ask pertinent questions and be correctly filled. When feasible, parents should seek the help of a doctor or nurse to complete any relevant parts. When the forms are completed, parents should make copies and submit them to the appropriate camp staff, including the nurse and doctor.

Campers' health forms must be completed completely and precisely. All areas of the health profile must be completed by campers. Before a kid may attend camp, the New York State Department of Health mandates that all health paperwork be completed. Incomplete forms will be rejected. Children's health forms must be submitted by May 1.

Market your summer camp in a number of ways to busy parents. To generate interest, provide referral bonuses, send cards to parents, and reach out to other groups. Invite prospective campers to your campgrounds to meet the staff. Parents want to know where their child is spending the summer, so give them a sense of the surroundings. This will encourage repeat registration and create favorable relationships with your program. Furthermore, parents want to know what kinds of activities your camp provides, so keep their preferences in mind.

Create a LinkedIn account. This professional social network is popular among high-net-worth individuals and those in positions of power. You may market your summer camp to parents who use LinkedIn by opening an account. You may also make secondary marketing contacts and find suitable partners. LinkedIn boasts 575 million monthly active users, with 40% of them checking the network every day. To connect with these individuals, make sure you publish on a frequent basis.

Furthermore, bright sunlight is beneficial to the eyes and reduces the risk of developing nearsightedness. Students who participate in outdoor learning environments are more likely to be engaged, and they develop critical thinking skills and achieve higher levels of performance.

Outside of the classroom, children learn valuable life skills and better coping mechanisms for the challenges they face as they grow. While failure can be difficult to accept, students learn to identify the root causes and try again. They also develop a more positive attitude by seeking support from peers and facilitators. This type of nature exposure is an excellent way to reduce anxiety and boost self-esteem in students. The great outdoors also encourages community service projects.

  • Hospitality Examples in Restaurant Management

    Published On: 06/06/2022
  • What instances of hospitality are there? Hospitality is the disposition of welcoming others into an area. Hospitality is the act of receiving a guest, which is closely tied to customer service. Early Americans were renowned for their generosity, and the pineapple rapidly became an emblem of their hospitality. Due to the danger and sluggishness of the trade routes between the United States and the Caribbean Islands, locating a ripe pineapple was considered a significant accomplishment. Hospitality may take various forms, and its definition is as diverse as the individuals and circumstances involved.

According to John Dockendorf, excellent hospitality entails listening to your guests and taking their criticism seriously. For instance, if a guest experiences an issue during their stay, a timely and courteous response will demonstrate your concern. It will also demonstrate to the guest that you understand and are eager to address their concerns. When a guest feels valued, they are more likely to respond favorably to sincere efforts to fix a problem. However, if the issue is a little nuisance, a fast apology may not be enough.

In brief, hospitality is the art of treating visitors with respect. It is the act of ensuring their comfort and happiness, whether through the service of food or beverages. It is a wide term that includes several subcategories and examples of various sorts of hospitality. Regardless of the style of hospitality provided, the ultimate objective is to make the guest feel unique. Consider how your customers perceive your business and brand. There are several methods to demonstrate hospitality, including customizing services and honoring loyal clients.

Time management is vital for individuals in the hospitality industry. Nobody likes waiting, and being late will result in a multitude of issues. In addition to causing hassles, you will also disturb your coworkers and lower the quality of service. Therefore, arrive early to prevent rushing guests. A visitor who arrives late will grow agitated and frustrated. Being punctual will also improve your relationships with your guests. Your guests may be more inclined to complain about your ineptitude if you arrive late.

John Dockendorf stated that current technologies must be utilized to provide consistent service in contemporary hospitality. With more connected consumers than ever before, technology has also become more essential for a hotel to ensure a pleasant stay. In addition to the newest technological advancements, it is essential to grasp what hospitality is and is not. For instance, hospitality might be the remodeling of a hotel. The hotel may then market its newly renovated rooms and amenities to guests, who will likely be more likely to return. Moreover, contemporary hospitality necessitates a personalized experience.

There are four primary industry segments: food and beverages, hotel, travel and tourism. Hotels, restaurants, bars, and lounges comprise the food and beverage category. Tourism includes hostels, airbornes, and home-sharing services. The mix of the four components is what makes a hotel exceptional. Hospitality is comparable to Hollywood in that it inspires a varied array of professions.

In general, hospitality is a manifestation of affection and concern. It's a great approach to strengthening relationships and making people feel welcome. Another method to express hospitality is by being hospitable and asking people to stay at your house. Not only does hospitality entail welcoming guests, but also a desire for their return. The more guests you have, the better, since this indicates a job well done.

Additionally, hospitality may be commercialized. Restaurants are an example of hospitality since they provide food that may be consumed on the premises or transported to be consumed later. The same holds true for takeout restaurants. Other sorts of restaurants include fast food and places serving quick food. In general, catering is the service that is offered in a certain place, however, it is not usually the primary service.
