Annually the Josephburg Agricultural Society awards scholarships based equally on academic achievement and community involvement. Three are available in 2026. One of the $1000 scholarships will be awarded to a student enrolled in a program leading to a career in agriculture. Another $1000 scholarship in memory of our longstanding Director and JAS volunteer, Doug Maschmeyer, will be awarded to an individual who exemplifies committment to mentoring and volunteering.

In all, three $1000 scholarships will be awarded. No individual applicant will be awarded more than one scholarship in any year.

Eligibility
The scholarships will be available to any post-secondary student commencing or currently enrolled in any year of an accredited program, degree, or diploma. There is no age limit. Applicants are allowed no more than three successful applications.

Selection Criteria
Children of directors, former directors, permanent employees and members of the Josephburg Agricultural Society are given first consideration, but not exclusively chosen. Academic achievement and local community involvement are determining factors. In regards to the Doug Maschmeyer Scholarship, mentoring and local volunteering will be key factors in choosing a deserving applicant.

Prerequisites
The applicant must meet the required prerequisites acceptable to the receiving institution. Prior to the deadline, a copy of Alberta Transcript of High School Achievement (photocopy acceptable) must be forwarded to the Scholarship Committee. If the applicant has completed some university or college, a record of academic achievement from the institution is required.

References
Candidates must provide two currently-dated reference letters pertaining to the criteria for selection (academic achievement and community involvement). Candidates may also be personally interviewed by the Scholarship Committee.

Essay and Video
All candidates must submit a 500-word essay explaining what volunteerism means to them and how they have incorporated the spirit of volunteerism into their own lives. For applicants to be considered for the Doug Maschmeyer Scholarship, their essay must also explain what mentorship means to them. All candidates must also submit a video of not more than 90 seconds in length.

The video should portray the candidate's community involvement, academic achievements, and career goals. The videos submitted by students who are awarded scholarships may be viewed at a Josephburg Presents Dinner Concert so community members have opportunity to acknowledge and congratulate the students.

Videos should be zip, mp3, wma, mpg, flv, avi, mov, m4v or mp4. A signed release form will be required.

DEADLINE - SEPTEMBER 1st
Two-page application form, two reference letters, a copy of Alberta Transcript of High School Achievement and/or University or College Academic Achievement, proof of attendance at said institution and 500 word essay must be submitted to the Josephburg Agricultural Society.

To Reapply
It is up to the applicant to resubmit an updated application. Consider adding recent involvements and accomplishments.

1. The name and occupation of the individual writing your letter of reference
2. How long the individual has known you
3. The type of community activities the applicant has been involved in and information about your character and work ethic
4. Email and personal contact information of individual writing your letter of reference
   

IF YOU HAVE ANSWERED "NO" TO ANY OF THE REQUIRED ITEMS, PLEASE WAIT AND SUBMIT THE FULL INFORMATION WHEN YOU HAVE IT. Incomplete applications will not be considered by the committee.

RELEASE AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT: In consideration of the Josephburg Agricultural Society, Strathcona County and the Scholarship Committee.

I, the undersigned, on behalf of my heirs, administrators, executors, successors and assigns hereby agree to indemnify, save harmless and release the Josephburg Agricultural Society, Strathcona County and the Scholarship
Committee, their employees and agents, their heirs, administrators, executors, successors and assigns of, from and against all claims of every nature and kind whatsoever which may be made against myself and any person, firm, corporation, governmental agency and from and against any liability losses, damages, costs, arising from or in any way incidental to my activities while taking part in the video process for the JAS Scholarship application.

I hereby grant Josephburg Agricultural Society permission to the publication and use of my likeness for the purpose of promotion, publicity, advertising, or other manner or media.

Likeness shall include, but not be limited to, photographs, sound and/or video recording, brochures, publications, web pages, social media and promotional materials.

I agree the actual material involved is and shall continue to be the property of Josephburg Agricultural Society and that neither shall I have any right of review or approval regarding the use of my likeness in such material.

Yes, with my signature, I agree I have read, reviewed and agree to the video release and indemnity agreement as put forward by the Josephburg Agricultural Society.
