We, the undersigned, urge the Mayor of Steilacoom to temporarily stop the trapping of beavers in Farrell Marsh, and to work toward a solution that would allow the beaver family to stay in the marsh, while still minimizing legal risk to the town.
We recognize that a beaver dam presents additional risk to downstream property owners, but proven methods exist to minimize that risk. Addititonally, if the dam is removed, annual flooding resulting from an uncontrolled outflow could cause even more damage.
We would like the town to commission a task force that looks at such factors as
- Flooding frequency and risk
- Insuring against property damage
- Improvement of downstream culverts
- Outflow control devices (pond levelers)
- Impact of higher water levels on trails, plant life, and wildlife
- Educational opportunities for students and citizens
- Projected costs associated with various solutions
With the information provided by the task force, an informed decision can be made about the viability of the beaver remaining in the marsh, and what steps can be taken to keep Farrell Marsh natural and safe.
Sincerely,
