• The Community Celebrating Diversity Scholarship

    The Community Celebrating Diversity Scholarship is funded by the corporate sponsors of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration and Community Celebrating Diversity (CCD).

    Under this program, CCD sponsors five $2,500 scholarships to high school graduates who show promise of continued excellence in an effort to recognize and promote student excellence and achievement. The scholarships will be awarded thusly: two for pursuing a STEM degree and three for general education. These scholarships are for study at post-secondary institutions of higher education in Arizona. Student recipients under this program are known as “Community Scholars”.

  • Description:

    The scholarships can be utilized for the “cost of attendance” at any postsecondary institution of higher education in Arizona. Postsecondary is defined as a two-year college, technical, vocational, or 4-year university. Awards will be granted on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated community service, financial need, and an essay on the importance of respecting diversity.

  • Selection Criteria:

    The selection criteria and procedures are designed to ensure that all eligible students receive consideration without regards to race, color, national origin, sex, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or economic background.

    The following selection criteria are utilized in identifying “Community Scholars”:

    • The eligible student must be a full-time resident of Arizona and has community involvement in Scottsdale.
    • The eligible student must be a U.S. citizen, or provide evidence that he or she is a permanent resident of the United States.
    • The eligible student must be a graduating high school senior with a minimum GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Award Selection

    Scholarship recipients will be selected on a competitive basis using a combination of criteria, including financial need, community service involvement, academic performance, leadership and essay. 

    Award recipients will be notified by 5/3/2021.  A recognition ceremony is tentatively scheduled for 5/12/2021.

  • Application Process
    The eligible student must submit the online Community Celebrating Diversity Scholarship application to receive consideration for a scholarship. The application must include the following information:

    • Student application including, all required fields, a summary of involvement with the Scottsdale community, leadership activities, honors/awards, and any work experience
    • An essay focusing on how your leadership and community service has had a positive impact on fostering diversity within the Scottsdale community
    • Official transcript
    • Two letters of recommendation
