CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
THE GENERATOR
The perfect low-key class for the busy writer who craves a regular writing practice that's low-commitment and pressure-free; new sources of inspiration; and a writerly community!
Every week, I will offer a muse — a reading, short video, art, music — centered on a particular theme. Past themes have included: nature as metaphor, ekphrasis, speculative fiction, and stories from our lives. We'll digest and discuss, then move through a series of generative writing exercises.
The goals: cultivate a pleasure and curiosity-based writing practice, consume small nuggets of inspiration, and get your writerly gears turning!
7 weeks, 1 hour/week, via Zoom
Either Tuesdays or Wednesdays, evening EST/afternoon PST *
Starting the week of July 7, 2024 (last class during the week of August 18, 2023)
WRITE WITH FRIENDS: WRITING GROUP FOR SELF-DIRECTED WRITERS
If you have a lot of ideas for stories but never make the time to write them, or if you've been trying to develop a consistent writing practice but don't want a classic workshop structure where the instructor tells you what to write, or if you crave company while drafting/revising your manuscript — this group is for you! This group is for writers who have their own direction in their writing, but need accountability, structure, and community in their writing practice.
Every week, we will do a warm-up write and set our intentions for the session together. Then, we will work on our respective projects in "writing sprints". Sessions will include brief peer-to-peer check-ins and reflective writing exercises.
The goals: make progress in your project, build a sustainable and enjoyable habit of writing regularly, and find your writerly community!
7 weeks, 1.5 hour/week, via Zoom
Either Tuesdays or Wednesdays, evening EST/afternoon PST *
Starting the week of July 7, 2024 (last class during the week of August 18, 2023)
* THE GENERATOR and WRITE WITH FRIENDS will be scheduled in-tandem: one class will be on Tuesdays, and other will be on Wednesdays. This is so that you can take both, if you wanted! Days/times for each class will be picked based on the availability of students who register before May 20th. If you have a day/time preference, register early!
THE NEXT STEP: WORKSHOPPING & REVISING FOR PROSE WRITERS
This class is all about giving you the time, space, and holistic support to tackle the revision process. Take this class if revision intimidates you; if you don't know where to begin; if you don't know when the revision is "done"; and/or if you need extra eyes on your work!
You'll have two opportunities to workshop up to 3750 words (~15 pages, double-spaced) of your short- or long-form project. I will offer a new perspective on revision, as well as revision tactics. During classes, you'll have time to both substantively edit your work, and do line-edits — all with the support of your cohort. Let's finalize that damn draft!
The goals: reframe and reclaim the revision process, learn new approaches to revision, and start and finish the revision of your selected project.
IMPORTANT NOTE: cohort is limited to 6 participants — register ASAP to save your spot!
5 weeks, 3 hours/week, via Zoom
Mondays ~6pm-9pm EST / ~3pm-6pm PST
(time of class can shift up to an hour either direction, based on students' availability)
Starting August 19, 2024 (last class on September 23, 2024) — no class on Labor Day
CRASH COURSE: SUBMITTING FOR PUBLICATION IN LITERARY MAGAZINES
For writers of all genres who are submitting their work to literary magazines for the first time, or need a refresher on the process. Bring the final draft of a piece: you'll submit it in real-time during class!
Demystify the process; prep all of your submission materials; find mags that would make good homes for your writing; and submit your work with the support of other writers.
Remember: you wrote this piece in the first place for a reason. You stuck through the revision process for a reason. And now, you're still reading this class description for a reason. Come on, writer: it's time!!!
4-hour workshop via Zoom
Saturday, September 28th
11am-3pm EST / 8am-12pm PST
(short lunch break included)
