Join us for the next workshop in our Linguist’s Toolkit for Language Learning series: “Mighty Morpheme Word Arrangers — Morphology & Word-Building for the Language Learner.” Morphology is the linguistic study of morphemes, or, in plain terms, the study of forms. In this workshop, we will demonstrate how learning about morphology and word-building is extremely useful for the language learner as this knowledge scaffolds understanding of how your target language works as whole. We will first introduce the notion of the morpheme, a fundamental unit of meaning in language, and look at a few types of morphemes (e.g. stems and affixes). We will then discuss morphological processes from two perspectives: how they change sounds, and how they change meaning. In the second half of the workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned by analyzing the morphology of your target language and doing your own word-building with instructor feedback!
