This is an opportunity to represent your point of view and help us better understand the current context around grief challenges in Lexington. Your experience will shape future interventions in our community.
As someone who has lost an important person in your life, grief can feel unbearable and sometimes leads to long-term emotional problems, changes in behavior, or strained relationships that impede the ability to lead a meaningful and fulfilling life.
What, if any, mental health challenges have you experienced since your loss? What resources, supports, activities or places have been critical in helping you cope? Are there gaps in resources, supports, or assistance in Lexington that might be helpful?
LexArts, the Fayette County Health Department, BlueGrass Care Navigators and the Kentucky Center for Grieving Children and Families are seeking participants to participate in our Photovoice project. Participants will be asked to write about and photograph how aspects of the Lexington community affect mental health. Participants will be able to share their perspectives on mental health through photography, reflection and action.
Registrants will participate in 3 sessions, held at Bluegrass Care Navigators (1733 Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, KY 40504) on the following dates:
Thursdays, October 10, 17, and 24, 2024 from 5:30–7 p.m.
Participants do not need to have photography experience and are not required to have a camera. Mobile phone cameras may be used.
Photographs created by PhotoVoice participants may be included in an exhibition in November at ArtsPlace to share the work with the public.
More about PhotoVoice:
PhotoVoice is inspired by the idea that “a photograph is worth a thousand words” and that photography can be used to create positive social change.
PhotoVoice projects utilize a process where participants create photographs to showcase aspects of their community, environment, and daily experiences to share with others. Participants share their photographs and participate in discussions to determine common themes about their experiences.
The main goals of PhotoVoice projects are to help participants understand the forces and circumstances that impact their lives as well as bring about change by sharing experiences with the public and influencing policy makers.
