  • Dr. Martin Stewart Karp has worked to improve education by being directly involved in the teaching and leadership process. His experience spans classroom teaching, school leadership, board service, and policy development, all of which aim to meet students' needs and strengthen educational systems.

    Academic Qualifications

    He earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership, Master of Education, and Bachelor of Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing from the University of Miami. He also completed a master’s degree from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications through an M.S./M.B.A. program. These achievements have given him the knowledge and skills to address educational challenges from multiple perspectives.

    Broad Career Experience

    Karp has been a teacher, principal, and school board member, now serving as Chief of Staff to a network of independent schools. He has worked to expand programs for gifted students, increase services for students with special needs, and support student well-being.

    Outside of education, he has served as Business Manager for Southern Playbill Publishing and Circulation Director for Miami Beach Magazine, experiences that broadened his organizational and leadership abilities.

    Early Teaching and Program Development

    At Biscayne Elementary, Martin Karp created a gifted program that brought together students from public and private schools, encouraging cooperation and academic growth. He has also been an Exceptional Student Education (E.S.E.) specialist and Department Chairperson, organizing student fairs to highlight special education.

    In collaboration with Lehrman Community Day School, he developed a public-private gifted education model — among the first in the district — to provide an enriched learning experience for students from both sectors.

    He also produced WKDZ Kids’ World, a weekly educational program aired on Cable TAP and WLRN-TV Channel 17 that showcases students and classroom activities.

    School Board Service

    From 2004 to 2020, Martin served four consecutive terms on the Miami-Dade County School Board. His work included creating healthier school environments, implementing later high school start times, offering vaping education, expanding services for students with disabilities, and increasing access to science and gifted education programs.

    Current Leadership Role

    As Chief of Staff to the Head of Schools for a consortium affiliated with Talmudic University, He oversees contracts, leads meetings, develops strategy, and manages academic divisions across K-8, high school, and post-secondary programs.

    He founded the Success Center at Yeshiva Elementary School, designed for students who excel in nontraditional settings. The program combines core academic skills with weekly STEM projects and enrichment activities, such as guest speakers.

    He has introduced new assessment tools to monitor progress and created individualized learning plans based on students’ interests and strengths.

    Service to the Community

    Beyond his professional roles, Dr. Martin Karp has volunteered for causes related to children, education, and animals. Since 1995, he has been active with Miami-Dade Animal Services and the Humane Society through the H.O.P.E. Contest (Help Our Pets Everyday/Help Overcome Pet Euthanasia), encouraging students to promote animal welfare.

    He has also served in Scouting USA since the 1980s, holding positions including Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 36, Cubmaster, and Advancement Chairman. For over 16 years, he has been a WLRN Community Advisory Board member, helping review and edit lesson plans for award-winning documentaries.

    His volunteer work also includes contributions to The Children’s Trust, the New World School of the Arts, and other local organizations.
