Thanks for taking part in this project! Please take a moment to read and complete this form.
  • Congratulations, singers!

You've been invited to participate in the Metropolitan Opera's Virtual Honors Choir for the 2022-23 school year.

This year we are asking you to perform the tender and heartbreaking aria "Una furtiva lagrima” from Donizetti's opera L'Elisir d'Amore. This piece is one of the most famous tenor arias in the opera repertoire, and we are excited to debut a new choral arrangement for all voice types.

All instructions and related materials are available at metopera.org/honorschoir.

Please submit your final video on Wednesday, May 17 at 11:59pm EST. In the meantime, you can email Rae De Vine (rdevine@metopera.org) with any questions.

We look forward to hearing you sing!

    Best Practices for Recording Video

    • Orientation: If using a phone, we recommend a horizontal orientation (i.e., holding your phone as if watching Netflix). If using a computer camera, there's nothing to worry about.
    • Sound: For both aesthetics and quality, earbuds with a mic work best. Wired headphones work well, too. Recording with a device's native microphone is the alternative we would use last.
    • Background: As clean a wall as possible will look the best. When the background is busy, it's easier to get distracted.
    • Lighting: The space should be well lit to minimize shadows. If you're in a room with a window, you should stand facing it—rather than away from it—so you're not backlit. If using a lamp or other light source, positioning the light in front and above to mimic the direction of sunlight is the most flattering.
    • Framing: You should place the device at about eye-level so that you're looking straight at the camera. If recording on a computer, use books or boxes to raise it up. If recording on a phone without a stand, you can also use books to hold, raise, and balance the phone.
