  • Mortar Boards provide valuable time and energy as volunteers for the Society. We are always looking for volunteers to serve on committees and aid in various tasks of Mortar Board!   • National Leader Position Opportunities

    Opportunities that require at least a 2-year commitment. Each of these opportunities requires an additional application or nomination and interview. National Council members are elected by the student delegation, Region Coordinators are appointed by the National President, and Foundation Board of Trustees are elected by fellow Foundation Trustees.
  • Committee Opportunities

    Standing Committees request at least a 1-year commitment, with the opportunity for continued engagement. Ad hoc committees are typically shorter in terms, from a few weeks to up to a 1-year commitment.
  • Standing Committees

    Standing committees are appointed by either the National President or the Foundation President and are typically 2-year terms. Please select any / all committees of interest.

    Development: Members advance the mission of the Society by growing the capacity to solicit, steward, and accept philanthropic contributions.

    Community & Belonging: Members are committed to inclusive excellence in programming and membership, fostering community and a sense of belonging, and creating equal opportunities for all.

    Fellowship: Members are responsible for reviewing and selecting the fellowship recipients on an annual basis.

    Finance: Members review financial statements and budgets and make recommendations regarding corresponding financial policies and procedures.

    Governance: Members are responsible for reviewing Bylaws and proposed Bylaws changes and make recommendations on an annual basis.

    Investment Advisory: Members advise on the investment portfolio of the Mortar Board National Foundation.

    Standing Nominations: Members are responsible for recruiting and promoting National Council opportunities and make recommendations for the annual slate of candidates.

  • Ad Hoc Committees

    Ad hoc committees are appointed by either the National President, the Foundation President, or the Executive Director and are typically for terms no longer than one year. Please select any / all committees of interest.

    Advisor Advisory Committee: Members are responsible for providing guidance, resources, and support to enhance the advisor experience. Current and past advisors encouraged. 

    Alumni Engagement Board: Members of this committee work with other alumni and the Alumni Representatives at-Large on the National Council to better engage alumni through programs, member specific benefits, and creating other opportunities to provide member benefits. 

    Awards Selection Committee: Members read and review nominations / submissions for annual alumni, collegiate, and chapter awards.

    Career Connections Committee: In 2024, Mortar Board launched "Career Connections," an initiative geared towards collegiate and young alumni. We are looking for alumni to help coordinate career and professional development opportunities. 

    Membership Committee: Members assist in enhancing, promoting, and sustaining membership including expanding Mortar Board to new chapters and helping to reactivate dormant chapters.

    National Conference Planning Committee: The Mortar Board National Conference, held virtually in odd-years and in-person in even years, seeks the input and assistance of alumni to create the best conference experience for our attendees and keep our flagship initiative thriving.

  • Chapter Engagement & Campus Outreach Opportunities

    Opportunities that range from longer term (chapter advisor) to one-time (facilitate an introduction).
  • Chapter Engagement & Campus Outreach Opportunities

    Chapter Advisor (Faculty / Staff Advisor): Faculty or staff currently working on campus who are interested in serving as an advisor to a current collegiate chapter. *This person does not need to be a member of Mortar Board.

    Chapter/Campus Liaison: Help forge connections with campuses and work with the National Office around areas such as looking for a chapter advisor, building a case for administrative support for existing chapters, and facilitating introductions between the National Office and campuses. (Volunteers do not need to be local to the chapter.)

    Chapter Visits:  Visit a chapter locally or while in the vicinity (i.e., when traveling) to provide an alumni connection to current members, visit with the advisor(s), and/or attend a chapter meeting or event.

    Community Advisor: Serve as a local Community Advisor to work with a current chapter providing advice, guidance, and support to members. 

    Expansion Assistance:  Assist in helping to expand Mortar Board to colleges and universities that currently do not have a chapter. 

    Reactivation Assistance: Assist in helping to reactivate Mortar Board on campuses that have a chartered chapter of Mortar Board that is currently inactive.
