The brothers of the Nu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. invite young high school men and women from the Class of 2026 to apply for our $1,000 academic scholarship for the 2026-2027 year.
Class of 2026 graduates from the local high schools listed below are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Appomattox Regional Governor's School (ARGS-Petersburg)
- Colonial Heights High School
- Dinwiddie High School
- Hopewell High School
- Matoaca High School
- Petersburg High School
- Prince George High School
- Surry County High School
- Sussex Central High School
*If the applicant is NOT from any of the high schools listed above, they must select Other from the drop-down list and type their school name in the appropriate box. Students from other Virginia high schools are welcomed to apply.
*STUDENTS FROM ALL VIRGINIA-BASED HIGH SCHOOLS ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY*
Basic criteria include the following:
- Incoming full-time freshman at Virginia State University (VSU) or Virginia Union University (VUU) during the 2026-2027 academic year;
- A 3.0 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale;
- College Preparatory Curriculum;
- SAT score of 800 or higher which includes Critical Reading and Mathematics area;
- an TYPED essay of 200–250 words describing past and current experiences and future goals regarding academic achievement, leadership and community service; and
- TWO letters of recommendation (one should be from a teacher and the other can be from a counselor, administrator, coach, employer, etc.). Both recommendations must be TYPED. Handwritten recommendations submitted as part of the completed application materials will not be accepted or considered.
The complete application package must be submitted by the deadline (11:59pm on Friday, April 17, 2026)
The scholarship is annually renewable for up to three additional years for a possible total value of $4,000. To renew the scholarship during subsequent academic years, the recipient must do the following:
- matriculate (attend) full-time;
- maintain good academic standing/satisfactory progress at VSU or VUU with a 3.0 or higher GPA; and
- show evidence of end-of-semester grades (transcript) in order to have scholarship funds deposited into their student account at school. If the student does not show evidence of satisfactory grades at the end of the semester, they will forfeit their scholarship.
The breakdown of scholarshp funds is below (based on if the student is enrolled full-time at VSU or VUU for 4 years and fulfills GPA requirements)

Applicants are encouraged to attend the Financial Aid Workshop at their high school if the event takes place.
A complete Nu Lambda Chapter Scholarship Application package consists of:
- Online Scholarship Application Form
- Student’s Essay (must be TYPED and uploaded in Word or PDF format)
- Two Letters of Recommendation
- one must be from a teacher;
- other recommendation can be from a school counselor, coach, manager at work, or someone that can really attest to your qualities.
- both recommendations must be TYPED and uploaded in Word or PDF format.
- Scholarship Criteria Verification Form
- completed by a school Guidance Counselor;

- once completed, form must be uploaded with application package.
