Have your say on the single-use plastics ban!

Right now the federal government has NOT included single-use plastic water bottles in the 2021 plastics ban. Tell the government single-use plastic water bottles must be included in the ban by sending the letter below to Environment and Climate Change Canada. Ask the government if the Canadian Bottled Water Association or the Canadian Beverage Association lobbied the government to protect their product. We recommend you follow up your submission with a phone call to Minister Jonathan Wilkinson (Parliament Hill office: 613-995-1225 / Constituency office in North Vancouver: 604-775-6333). The deadline for comments is December 9, 2020.

Dear Environment and Climate Change Minister Wilkinson and Director of the Plastics and Marine Litter Division of ECCC: Thank you for publishing a list of single-use plastics to be banned in 2021. I was shocked to see that single-use plastic water bottles are NOT included. Single-use plastic water bottles must be included on the list since: • There is an affordable and reliable alternative from our municipal supply and available, to most people in Canada, at a much lower rate than single-use bottled water. • Over five million plastic water bottles are used every day in Canada. Most of them (90%) are not recycled and end up contaminating the environment. Our landfills are being overfilled with them. • These plastic bottles are not only an environmental pollution problem but particles and substances from plastic can be dangerous to human health. Has the Canadian Bottled Water Association (CBWA) or the Canadian Beverage Association (CBA) lobbied you to protect their product? If they have not contacted you, why have plastic water bottles NOT been included in the list of plastics to be banned in 2021? I urge you to reconsider and include single-use plastic water bottles on the banned list, for the health of our environment and our people. I await your reply.
