  • Practical Scenarios

  • Assistants and CVTs must often communicate with clients via e-mail and over the phone. We probably communicate via e-mail more often than many clinics, so representing the practice and yourself appropriately is very important.  Below are two scenarios that you may expeirence.  We would like to know how you would respond to these scenarios as if you were writing the e-mail to the client directly.

We know that your responses will not necessarily align with our actual procedures, please respond to them based upon your personal experience and the information provided in the scenario.  These scenarios are evaluating your communication skills and not necessarily your knowlege of in home veterinary procedures.

  • Scenario 1 - Euthanasia Information Request

  • You are helping out in the office by responding to e-mail inquiries about our in home veterinary services.

You receive the following inquiry from someone considering euthanasia for their pet:

    Client Name: Michael

    Pet Name: Bode - Canine

    Situation:

Bode had two discs removed a little less than two years ago. She has never fully recovered and now has little or now movement in the hind end. She requires me or my wife to assist her up 75% of the time. She has been defecating in the house due to the loss of control/feeling. We have been trying steroids to help, but she continues to deteriorate. Today is was traveling for work and my wife couldn't pick her up to help her outside. Bode's life is limited to laying in her bed all day. We have been waiting for a 'sign' and she has continued to deteriorate. She is no longer the active fun loving girl and want her to be at peace.

You must respond to them with at least the following information:

-Acknowlege, empathize and address their situation

-Ask them any questions you feel are pertinent to the situation.

-Provide the cost for the in home euthanasia ($250)

    -End the communication appropriately
