    Commission for Preparation for Ministry of Pittsburgh Presbytery
  • INFORMATION

    A fund to provide financial aid for students studying in an approved seminary to prepare for full-time church-related work in the Presbyterian Church (USA) has been established.  This fund will be administered by the Commission on Preparation for Ministry of Pittsburgh Presbytery.  A Seminary Student Aid Fund Sub-Committee of the Commission on Preparation for Ministry shall recommend to whom grants will be made and in what amount. The basis for these determinations shall be as follows:

    I.  ELIGIBILITY

    • The applicant must be in covenant relationship with Pittsburgh Presbytery through CPM;
    • The applicant must be a student in an approved seminary (i.e. as determined by the Commission on Preparation for Ministry); 
    • The applicant must be preparing for at least half time church-related work in the Presbyterian Church (USA); 
    • This Fund will be a source of last resort.  That is, the applicant must have made every reasonable effort to secure funds from other sources;
    • The applicant may have no grade below a “B” (or equivalent) during the preceding term;
    • The applicant must not have been granted or be anticipating requesting an exception to the usual requirements for those preparing for ministry through Pittsburgh Presbytery.  This shall include all procedural requirements as well as constitutional requirements for ordination if ordination is being sought;
    • The Commission on Preparation for Ministry may consider such other data as seems relevant.

    II.  APPLICATION

    • The applicant must supply the Commission with any relevant information necessary to establish the extent of need and resources (see application form);
    • The completed application must be received two weeks prior to the meeting of the Commission on Preparation for Ministry.
    • The applicant must supply or have supplied to the Finance Sub-Committee any references, certifications or other data required by the Commission on Preparation, including endorsement and recommendation by the applicant’s home church Session.

    III.  AMOUNT OF GRANT

    • The maximum to be granted to any one applicant during any one academic year shall be $1,500;                    
    • The maximum to be granted to any one applicant throughout their seminary training shall not exceed $4,500.

    IV.  MISCELLANEOUS

    • The Commission on Preparation for Ministry shall be empowered to do and perform all things necessary to the administration of the Fund, including, but not limited to the determination of eligibility, and the amount and form of information to be supplied by the applicant.
    • The John Oldman Jr. Memorial Seminary Student Aid Fund shall be held and/or invested by Pittsburgh Presbytery for said purpose.  In June of each year, the Commission on Preparation for Ministry will be advised of the amount of funds that can be withdrawn for scholarship grants.  The amount will be 5% of the average of the previous twelve (12) rolling quarters total held in the fund.

    Desiring to secure the best education possible in order to increase my effectiveness as a Christian Minister of Word & Sacrament, and being in need of funds to enable me to study for the coming year, I hereby solicit a grant of $1,500 from the Commission on Preparation for ministry of Pittsburgh Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church (USA), in accordance with the rules and policies of said presbytery. I have read the Student Grant rules and accept the requirements contained therein. I solemnly pledge that in the event of receiving a grant, I will limit my expense to the cost of living and of my education.  I promise to notify Pittsburgh Presbytery of any changes I may make in my school or residence.

    Session Recommendation by Applicant’s Church to the Commission on Preparation for Ministry of Pittsburgh Presbytery:

    The session of the applicant's church of membership noted above has examined the above application for a grant of $1,500 and is persuaded of the worth of the applicant, his/her ability, industry, economy and promise of Christian usefulness, and of his/her need of the amount applied for to prosecute his/her studies for the coming year.  On motion, the session approved the application and recommend the same to Pittsburgh Presbytery for favorable action.
