• Spencer Park Gala and Market 2026

    1st and 2nd of January each year.
  • Market dates: 1st and 2nd January, 10am-4pm daily, held at Spencer Park. This Market is fully booked every year and consists of 150+ stalls, rides, food and entertainment, however we can also contact people off the waitlist the week prior due to cancellations.

    This market is not run, organised or sponcered by the Christchurch City Council. Please make sure to read all of the rules carefully as these make up the health and safety plan of the market and have changed since last year.

    Please note returning stallholders will have till the 31st of August to return their forms, new stallholders accepted from the 1st September.  Payment must be made promptly after acceptance and within the 2 week timeframe, otherwise your site may be given to the next person on the waitlist.

    • The following Rules, Requirements and Responsibilities make up our health and safety plan.


      These rules and responsibilities, along with the conditions make up most of our Health & Safety plan. A fully printed version with forms will be available at the information sites and at the stage. There will also be a copy of the rules at the First aid stand.

      Lost Property

      Lost and found which is either handed in or found around the gala can be handed in at stage or information sites.

      If not claimed by the end of the day it will be held by organizer for collection.

      Any items of value will be handed in to police.

    • Rules and Requirements: Returning Stallholders 
    • Please note returning stallholders will be able to reapply for the same space and have till the 31st of August to return their forms, new stallholders accepted from the 1st September. All site fees need to be received by the 30th September. Payment must be made promptly after acceptance and within the 2 week timeframe, otherwise your site may be given to the next person on the waitlist.

      In other words after 1st October it will be first in to pay for a site gets allocated a site from what is left.

      Bookings are open up until the gala. We do our best to accommodate site requests but it is at the organizers decision and all decisions are final.

      Note: those stallholders that were on a different site to what they booked last year may be on a different site this time.

       

    • Rules and Requirements: Overnight Camping 
    • Overnight camping for stall holders is now available on your site 31st and/or 1st at no charge.

      If you are staying overnight or leaving tables, gazebo etc. please be aware that you are responsible for your own products. The market organizers will take no responsibility for any goods that are damaged or stolen.

      Toilets, water and BBQs on site, the camp ground may allow the use of their showers at a cost. Note access gates locked at dark. Emergency keys held by the organiser and Bumble Bums site

      All Food Vendors are to supply the following on Application –

      a. Menu of what you sell (only approved foods as you list may be sold on your site)

      b. Food License and Certifications (e.g., Gas etc.) as per Christchurch City Council (CCC) specifications.

      c. Copy of your H&S Plan and Public Liability Certificate

      d. Please state what source of energy your operation requires from the list below.

      Please note that under the Health & Safety at Work Act 2015, you are responsible for the safety of visitors and staff (including volunteers), in and around your site. All cables to be covered with suitable matting, all cooking facilities must have appropriate firefighting equipment and first aid provisions. All hot and cold surfaces out of public reach. Generators must be roped off from the public / kids and no trip hazard for walkers, must have an RCD and circuit breaker. Please be conscious of the noise your generator makes and respect other stallholders and members of the public.

      Amusement Rides/Devices (Including inflatables):

      • All rides to meet CCC standards and be checked by CCC staff before use.
      • Trained operators / staff only to operate rides.
      • Own health and safety plans and public liability insurance (copy supplied to us when booking your site)
      • Rules of rides to be displayed for all users
      • No rides left over night or unattended
      • All rides to be fully fenced from non-users, Generators & leads to be fenced.
      • Please supply list of ALL rides you intend to bring to the Gala

    • Site Information:

      We will do our best to accommodate site requests but it is at the organizers decision and all decisions are final. 

      Returning stall holders will be able to reapply for the same space until 31st of August.

      We will try to give you your requested site however this is not always guaranteed as sites fill very quickly. You may be allocated a different site/size that what you requested however this will be communicated to you.

      Note: those stallholders that were on a different site in 2025 to what they booked may be on a different site this year.

      Stall holder conditions:

      These Rules and Responsibilities make up our Health and Safety plan. A full copy of all our health and safety information, including forms, will be available at the information sites and at stage. All stallholders and entertainers to get a copy of our Health and Safety plan.

      a) The Stallholder / Vendor undertakes to comply with all regulations and bylaws applicable to the site including but not limited to: The Fair-Trading Act, the Consumer Guarantees Act, the Building Act 1991 and the Health & Safety at Work Act 2015 and indemnifies the Spencer Park Market and Gala from all claims, costs and damages arising whatsoever for breach by the Stallholder/Vendor.

      b) Stalls must be kept clean and tidy. Waste disposal, including fats and liquid waste, is the responsibility of the Stallholder at all times. If the Gala Crew has to remove litter from your stall site after pack out you may be charged. If you require a hand to place your rubbish in the large skip provided (please do not use the bins provided for the customers), we would be happy to help, please ask any of our crew to give you a hand.

      c) The location of stalls will be at the decision of the management. We will try to give you your requested site however this is not always guaranteed as sites fill very quickly. you may be allocated a different site or size.

      d) Spencer Park Market and Gala management has overall control of signage, material and products sold or displayed at the event. Please note that any signage, material or products may be refused inclusion entirely at the decision of the Management.

    • Rules and Requirements: Gala Opening Times, Vehicles onsite and Travelling Speeds 
    • Gala Opening Times:

      Campers start to come over to the market on the 1st from 8.30 - 9 am, with most people starting to come around 10 am. Please be aware that there ARE cash out facilities at the entrance to Gala, please expect lines if you intend to use these. There is limited internet and cellphone signal so please factor this into your visit.

      1st January

      Gates open on 1st at 6am, and pack down can begin after 4pm. Please do not pack down and finish trading before 4pm. All vehicles not staying on stall site, must be offsite by 9am on the 1st.

      Sites are NOT held after 8.30AM on the 1st. This is so that we are able to fill any gaps that may occur due to no shows

      2nd January

      Gates open on the 2nd at 7.30am, and pack down can begin after 4pm. Please do not pack down and finish trading before 4pm. All vehicles not staying on stall site, must be offsite by 10am on the 2nd.

      Sites are NOT held for returning stallholders after 8 AM on the 2nd if they want the same space as the 1st. This is so that we are able to fill any gaps that may occur due to no shows with new stallholders who are doing the 2nd day only. 

       Vehicles onsite and Travelling speeds

      All vehicles not staying on stall site, must be offsite by 9am on the 1st and 10am on the 2nd. No vehicles, except for approved emergency vechiles are able enter market area between 9am and 4pm. If you may need to leave the Gala between 9am and 4pm please park your vehicles outside the Gala event area and park in the public parking area. If vechiles are moving around during the trading periods, we may have to ban all vechiles from stall sites in the future due to prioritising visitors health and safety.

       

      All Vehicles travelling within the gala site must travel with hazard lights on and a maximum speed of 5km. This is an area where children play and there are a lot of moving people first thing when everyone is setting up and packing down.

       Site Entry

      Entry is off Heyders Road, and will be sign posted. Please wait at check in point to be checked in and shown to site. This does cause some slight delays but we are processing everyone as fast as possible. Hazards lights must be used when driving through the market, stallholders’ cars only. Please be aware of speed, this is an area where children play.

    • Rules and Requirements: Weather and Rubbish 
    • Weather:

      This market will go ahead regardless of the weather unless there is a severe weather warning in place.

      Typically, this market has been lucky and have very nice hot weather, however there can be strong winds that come through from the nearby beach. We have often found that weather predicted to/or raining in Christchurch City has not turned up at Spencer Park and it has been a lovely day with no rain.

      Gazebos are recommended to be sandbagged down and/or pegged.


      If the event is fully cancelled due to unforeseeable reasons, 50% of site fees refunded. No refund if event held on scheduled day or part day.

       Rubbish:

      Spencer Park is a rubbish free park. On the gala days there are bins and recycling bins that are placed out for the visitors/public/customers to use. 

      Stall holders are requested to either take their rubbish home with them or ask to place their rubbish, boxes, containers etc. in our skips in the compound (just outside of the gala area). If you requiring a hand to place your rubbish in the large skip provided (please do not use bins provided for the customers), we would be happy to help, please ask any of our crew to give you a hand.

      Any rubbish left on your site after you leave may affect your chances of securing a site next year.

    • Rules and Requirements: Advertising 
    • Advertising is done by a volunteer stall holder, Bumble Bums, who will look after the official Facebook page.

      Please note that the information supplied in your application such as the 'burb about your stall' will be used for advertising purposes. This information and any advertising requests may be change slightly at the decision of the organisers.

      Standard included advertising: Each stall who have supplied blurb and photos through the online jotform application and is accepted into the market will be advertised on the official event page. This will be composed of one photo and one small blurb.

      There is the option to opt in for speciality advertising which is mentioned in a section further below.

       

      This is a family event which has run for 50+ years and we want to uphold the positive atmosphere that this market brings for all and keep it an enjoyable event for everyone.

       Radio and Signage Advertising

      Radio advertising and signage is sponsored by Treetech. Between these two parties we will aim to gather as much interest in this event as possible, however sharing the event on your own business pages or printing and sharing our official posters helps a lot to spread the word of this event. We have supplied official posters which can be used both digitally and printed to help spread the word of this event.

      On average we see around 8,000 customers on the 1st and 5,000 on the 2nd.

      We are always looking for spaces on fences for signage (size of a for sale property sign). If you are able to help out with having a sign on your fence please let us know in the application. This answer will not affect your application process

    • Rules and Requirements: Cancellation 
    • There is a non-refundable $30 administration fee on cancellation of site. Cancellation means – As a stallholder you decide to cancel your site. If site cancelled with in 48hrs of the Gala days, the cancellation fee increases to $60.

       

      If the event is fully cancelled due to unforeseeable reasons by the organisers, 50% of site fees will be refunded. No refund if event held on scheduled day or part day.

    • Rules and Requirements: Payment Details 
    • Payment is made AFTER confirmation of acceptance of your registration form which will come in either email or phone from the organiser.

      Payment must be received within 2 weeks of your application being approved or your site may be given to the next in the waitlist. 

      If you are not able to meet this deadline please call the organiser to discuss.

      No Payment means no Stall

      If you have not paid and have not spoken to the organiser to discuss an alternative arrangement or payment time, then you may not have a stall on the day. If you turn up and trade without payment you will be banned from returning to the market and there may be other financial repercussions that occur at the organisers decision.

       

      Payment Details:

      Payment is made after confirmation of acceptance of your registration. Any payments made before acceptance from the organiser is considered a donation that was willingly given and is not available for refunds.

    • Rules and Requirements: Site Sizes and Frontages  
    • Change of Site sizes

      We are phasing out our 4metre and 6metre wide market sites and as a result there will be a limited amount of 4m and 6m site in set areas only. The new structure will be 3m (or 2x3metre).

      We have a limited number of corner sites available.

      Frontage

      Most sites will have a 3m frontage and will be around 6m - 8m deep. This should allow plenty of room for your site and any vehicle you want to be on your site. 

      Make sure you fit

      If you require more space, you will need to book more than one site. If you have a bus, caravan, campervan, trailer or large vehicle please make sure you note this on your application.

      If your vehicle, trailer etc, will not fit on your site you will have to park it off site. This includes food venders. When applying for your site your towbar must be on your site (as this is included in the site size.)

      First Applied, First Served

      Sites are available on a 'first-come, first served' booking basis. Just because you came last year, does not mean that if you apply in November that you will get accepted and get the same site. Prebooking and applications are essential. Returning stallholders have until the 31st August to rebook their site.

    • Rules and Requirements: Animals at the Gala 
    • Dogs are welcome at the market as long as they are on a lead and in control at all times. If you bring a dog to the market please make sure that you clean up after your animal and that you do not allow it to go toilet on any stallholders items. Any damage to stallholders items due to your animal may result in the stallholder asking for compensation. The organisers take no responsibility for this.

      Please also be aware that not everyone has awareness around animals and as this is a family event there will be children who may not be able to tell when an animal wants to be left alone or is not friendly. Please keep this in mind when bringing your animal to the gala.

    • Entertainment Information 
    • Throughout the gala on the main stage and the market area, there are a range of different entertainments from musical, dancing, magicians, sport demonstrations or skills acts that are happening and these vary from day to day

      We are always on the look out for people or acts to be on the main stage and/or around the market/gala area and are always looking for upcoming stars, regardless of your experience.

    • Specialty advertising

      For those that want to have a bit more exposure we have a new opt in special advertising at the cost of $15. This fee includes having 3 photos to advertise your stall. We will also create combined reels of stall holders to advertise and give more exposure to your businesses. This may be made up from your attached photos in your application and any social media posts that you post on your individual pages.
