I am writing to ask for your support and co-sponsorship of recent legislation that has been introduced in the House and Senate regarding K2. These bills provide recognition for K2 veterans for the first time.

K2 was a forward operating base from 2001 through 2005, during which time approximately 15,777+ service members, civilians, and contractors were assigned. K2 was used in the early years of the Afghan war and was located on a former Soviet base. The DoD knew from the start that the site was contaminated with chemical and radiological weapons and almost 400 other toxicants. In response, the DoD classified the information, and when the base was abandoned, it ensured it remained secret and forgotten.

Over the years, thousands of K2 veterans grew ill and even had miscarriages; dozens began to die of rare cancers and other diseases. Many of them were not eligible for preventative care by the V.A. because the base did not exist in legislation, and their service was therefore not recognized.

Since early 2020, Congress has passed some legislation to recognize and care for K2 veterans, including section 2010 of H.R. 7105 and section 710 of the NDAA. These bills provided access to the burn pits registry and called for a ten-year study on the effects of toxic exposure to K2 veterans. But they did not go far enough. 

On 25 February 2021, the “K2 Veterans Care Act of 2021” was introduced by a bipartisan, bicameral group of Congressional Representatives and Senators. (S.B. 454 and H.R. 1355). These bills provide K2 veterans with the presumption of service connection for the diseases caused by their time at the base. I urge you to co-sponsor this bill and be a part of the solution so long denied to K2 veterans.
