ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Shelton Leadership Center is seeking professionals who are motivated to develop personal leadership skills while mentoring youth through their experience of the Red Hat Shelton Challenge this summer. The intent of the Red Hat Shelton Challenge is to provide each student with an enriching, developing leadership experience. Youth will explore areas of values-based leadership, integrity, team building, public speaking, and social responsibility. Students will learn about leadership via instruction, example and the personal opportunity to lead. It is offered to rising ninth through twelfth-grade youth with a grade point average of 3.0 or better.
Expenses Paid: Residence hall accommodations, meals at a campus dining hall, and use of indoor and outdoor facilities.
Volunteer Instructors will be expected to co-instruct the curriculum with the Peer Leader, provide guidance and assistance to the Peer Leaders and CMTs (when needed), and assist the overall implementation of the program needs. It is an expectation that all Instructors view self and other Instructors as having the authorization to make decisions to best meet the needs of all involved during the week when working with the youth and staff without coordinating Director's approval (if not accessible).
Additionally, each Instructor will oversee at least one of the program operations for the week:
Student Leadership: to facilitate the nightly team leader meeting
Fitness: to coordinate physical fitness activities each day of the Challenge; to make sure all necessary resources are available to the appropriate team (s) for each activity every morning.
Night Activities: to work with teams each night coordinating the evening activity; to assist student leaders who are responsible for carrying out the activity; to assist with planning, set up, and take down for the event.
Free Time: to supervise all students that are taking an active part in free time activities available; work collaboratively with Challenge staff to attend to student needs
Service Project: work with a local agency to coordinate service projects; work with Challenge Director and staff to coordinate projects on site.
